We're flying to Newquay at the start of July for a week. I've already sorted the hire car and now looking for places to stay. We want to stay a couple of nights in each place so we can get to see as much of cornwall as possible. Has anyone got any recommendations for hotels or places to visit? It's my job to arrange it all and I won't hear the end of it if I choose a dodgy hotel!

Go on trip advisor!

I go on trip advisor but sometimes it doesnt help, especially the reviews. One person says its the best hotel they've ever stayed in another one says its the worst. Was hoping people on here who live there would know some decent places.

Are you hiring a Car down there as Cornwall has many great sights, villages, Beaches and attractions, but many are out in the sticks without public transport..only about 5 hours from the wirral to drive?

Visits worth a look.

St Ives, Penzance, Harbours of Mevagissey, Polperro, Port Issacs. Atrractions include Eden Project, Flambards and St Micheals mount....more impotantly indoor and outdoor Karting in Plymouth

Have a good one and take a brolley!!

your flying from the Wirral? don't be silly bloody drive, then you wont hav eto hire a car and you can go anywhere, the drive down through cornwall through bodmin etc is the best bit!

We're flying, only £50 return from Liverpool and will take about 40mins, driving would take just under 6hours.

We've sorted the hire car so looking for some decent drives around there

Hi mate,

I love the north coast of Cornwall (except for Newquay that is - LOL) and we get down there at least twice a year. We always stay in the same hotel though - 1. because we have friends 5 miles down the road in Camelford and - 2. because the road network is pretty good, we can still get to most places within an hour or so from there.... So I can thoroughly recommend The Wellington Hotel in Boscastle!

And as for places to visit....

forget The Eden Project - I went back in 2000 and thought it was disappointing so never went back!

St Mawes - lovely little place. Depending on where you approach from, it might be best to park in Falmouth and get the foot passenger ferry across... (or from just outside Truro, get the King Harry car ferry; near Trelissic Gardens)

The Tortoise Garden in Lower Sticker (Nr St Austell) - off the beaten track, but well worth the visit!

Chapel Porth beach near St Agness - superb! And there's a lovely cliff-top walk along the coast path past the old mines and engine houses

Godrevey - on the eastern side of St Ives Bay; not only is the beach there nice; but if you head east along the cliffs, you can see colonies of seals basking on the (inaccessible) beach below!

Tintagel - the village itself is a bit tacky and (IMO) getting run-down; but the castle is a fantastic place to visit. And again, the cliff path walks are breathtaking...

Bude - OK seaside town; but the area near the old canal is rather nice. Plus the Bude Castle Museum is quite interesting - and has a rosette winning restaurant, so very good for lunch!

Boscastle itself is a pretty little village; and the harbour is (for me personally) one of my favourite places in England. Plus the Museum of Witchcraft is fascinating!

Kynance Cove is very nice; Glendurgan Gardens are lovely - and you can follow the path right down to Durgan Beach, near Mawnan Smith.

I have a soft spot for some of the prehistoric sites - The Men an Tol stones; Trethevy Quoit; Carn Euney and The Hurlers. All atmospheric....

St Michael's Mount - beautiful; a jewel of the coast near Marazion.....

And as for pretty, traditional fishing villages; there's Mousehole, Polperro, Port Isaac (of Doc Martin fame), Port Gavern, Coverack to name but a few....

...and if I can think of any more places I'll post them up!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

That's a great help! Thanks Richard. Much better than tripadvisor.

You're welcome mate - and whilst there's nothing liker personal experience, we all have to remember that we have different tastes!! Trip advisor is good, but everyone is a critic and either loves or hates a place; there are no "mediocre" reviews!!

I'm sure I could have thought of a few more places to visit (and avoid - LOL!!) but my mind's a blank right now. If you need any further suggestions I'm happy to help..... But we do have a few Cornish members on here (johnlowdnes for one) so I'd say they are even better qualified to help you out!

Still, I love Cornwall myself and hope to move there before I'm too old to enjoy it! And despite what you may hear about some roads, I often take the ZX down and have had no issues.... Except getting off the chain ferry at Fowey in January. Hell, that was a scrape (literally) at low tide!!!
