brake caliper advise

stripped out the front drivers caliper this afternoon and the 2 pistons at the top seem real stiff but the bottom ones push back real easy is this normal as i cleaned everything up and filed some paint of the sides of the pads and all seems well now going to do the other side tomorrow ,,would you say the caliper is on its way out ?

pistons seizing in the calipers is very common on our cars. You can get caliper seal kits for reasonable cost to refurb the calipers yourself.

The pistons will need to be removed - they push into an internal seal and can stick, get corroded and cause them to become stiff. Once removed you can clean the piston surface with some fine wet & dry with brake fluid on. Give them a good clean up & inspect for deep pitting. Light pitting from corrosion can often be cleaned up with the wet & dry paper. Deep pitting may require new pistons.

Refit with new seal & dust seal. It will transform your braking experience! I done mine years ago but upgraded to R33 Brembos a while back which is far better :)

you make it sound so easy lol ,,,think i would buy second hand ones that have life left in them i've no problem taking them off but think i would let some one whos knows there stuff to refurb them seen as its brakes

LOL! its not too bad to do but then it is what I do!

GTR calipers are a great upgrade if you can get them, they are quite cheap for what they are these days & are a direct bolt on job with the GTR discs

Hi Mate,

I guess you have now identified your wheel vibe problem following on from your other thread. TBH I'd not bother with second hand calipers myself; as you could well get the same problem in a few month time. Been there and done that!! So if you don't fancy rebuilding your own calipers - or going the whole upgrade hog like Paul suggests, then your best bet is to buy a set of refurbed calipers on an exchange basis.

300zx brakes are actually very good when they work properly (which by now, most probably don't as age and the car's weight take their toll). Big Redd is a good bet; and so are these places

And be prepared to replace the discs too - as the seized caliper could have caused yours to warp. Mine did just that - damn shame as Jeff had only replaced my discs and pads with his upgrade kit 5000 miles earlier

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
