Part way changing out my standard exhaust system to a 3" fully stainless one. So far I have managed to fit a de cat mongoose back section.

At the weekend I hope to swap the pre cat standard part for a 3" inch through stainless one.

My question is, can I remove the cast elbows with the engine in situ so as to de cat them and re fit?

I know.. I can but dream!!

yes I did, but it has been said i have psychic spanner powers and can will a spanner into doing just about anything. jokes aside, the top two are a bit of a pita, the bottom are piss easy, the heat shield may cause you issues but you can "convince" them off easy. just make sure you flood them with plently of wd40 before you start and go carefull, snapping a spud would be disastrous. I cant remember which way round it is but two are captive studs with a nut that winds on 12mm I think and the other have bolts that go into the turbo housing. when refitting you will probably find you have to do the top ones up by hand first to get enough clearance as they foul on the downpipe if you try to do it in the reverse order.

Yip, do everything in your power to avoid snapping one, happened to me last year and lost days to it!

Your post is a bit muddled mate, You know a Mongoose system is 2.5in and the vast majorty of UK supplied Decatts and Elbows are all 2.5in too?

In anycase fitting a pair of 3in exhaust elbows is no easy task at all and certainly unless someone else has started making them, they would possibly be for a left hooker, making 1 side very difficult to do.

Sorry about the muddle thread Smithy.:blushing:

You are spot on! it is in fact 2 1/2" and not 3" as I posted.

(it's not the first time that I have described things being a bit bigger than they actually are:whistling:)

Anyway, having taken everyones advice and soaked the 6 offending nuts over night in WD40. with the use of a power bar and a couple of extensions I managed to undo all 6 nuts without snapping anything. Will drop the exhausts later and see if I can get to the elbows.

Couple of questions, when I come to re assembling, what sort of anti seize grease should I use? Also, can anyone tell me where I can get some replacement nuts and gaskets from? (the ones for the exhaust that is!)

Thinking of making some copper gaskets up, or is that a waste of time and effort?

well after what seems bl**dy ages, I finally finished fitting my stainless decatted down pipes.

I had to offer the things up several time so as to get the hanging points in the right position, But with the aid of my trusty blow lamp and a couple tweaks, she now fits fine. Sounds great also. Not to loud so as to deafen me on a long run, but just load enough to turn heads.

I do not know if it is my imagination, but she seams to rev a lot easier. I can now floor it without that niggly bit of hesitation.

Very happy!

Meant to say, I did not take the elbows off, I could not figure out how to get to them.

Really wish I could have done though. Is there a "how too" anywhere?
