I have a couple noises can anyone shed any light on them?

1. On cold morinings theres a knocking / jangling noise behind the dash, could it be the Struts?

2. On Cold mornings get a Whining from what sounds like the drive shaft, normal?

Also the back end seems very unstable at any speed on bumpy roads. Feels like the rear wheel steering?

Its a 300ZX TT Jap '92.

I get something similar. I'd describe it more like a knocking/creaking noise though. Sounds like the front suspension or the chassis flexing!

I think this generally gets attributed to the rear shocks.

Yes, its a hard noise to describe. Sort of creaking, sort of metal joints rubbing together!!!

Also does that mean i may have a problem with my rear shocks?

Cheers

Possibly, yeah. I'm not really all that well up on the technical side, but this question has come up a few times before and often that's been the answer. Have a search through the old archived Tech Forum; you might find something helpful in there.

Also, check your rear Hicas arms, excessive play in those will cause it to skip around too, as well as your wheel alignment being out of spec.

our car also has the creaking noise. It only seems to happen after a good 10 mins of driving though.

ive got a creak too, kinda like a creaky rattle with a hint of squeak, front right hand side, its deffo suspention, probably worn linkag somewhere or a duff shock

To check your HICAS this is the procedure, not sure if it works i

havn't tried it yet.

Procedure:

1.Ignition switch 'off' manual tranny in neutral or a/t in 'p'

2.start the engine

3.within 10 seconds after turning the key to 'on', start the engine, turn steering wheel from left to right 20 degrees from neutral 5 times or more & pump the brakes 5 times. then press the brake pedal again to enter test mode.

4.turning the steering wheel left or right past 20 degrees will cause the rear wheels to turn (~1 degree)

5.Drive the car forward 15 feet under 9mph to enter the full diagnostic mode.

6. The HICAS dash light will flash a code indicating any problems. long flash is first digit, short flash is second digit.

7.Diagnostic mode is exited when: ignition is turned off, or if speeds exceed 9mph, or diagnostic has been operating longer than 5minutes.

HICAS LIGHT CODES FOR '90-93'

1.HICAS solenoid R.H

2.HICAS solenoid L.H

3.Cut-off valve

4.Power steering solenoid

5.Vehicle speed sensor

6.Steering angle sensor

7.Steering neutral position sensor

8.M/T: clutch sensor A/T: parking brake sensor

9.M/T: Neutral sensor A/T: Inhibitor sensor
