Will be doing an oil change in the next couple of weeks.

Other than letting it drain for a couple of days or so, are there any other tricks so as to get as much old oil out as possible?

Featured Replies

Long as the engine has been off for some time 12hrs plus there should be very little oil left around ..

no need to let it drain for 2 days

Asda are doing some 10w40 castrol for £12 4lt

Make sure u change the filter and Fill the filter with oil before refitting it

Warm the engine up first and slightly tilt the engine towards the sump plug by jacking the car to one side.

jack it up slightly to put the sump plug lower on one side....unless you remove the sump all the oil thats out will drain in the 1st hour as the plug is raised from the pan bottom

if the car is level .. the sump is angled towards the sump plug hole

tipping the engine/car to one side will speed up the flow of oil but the drainage

will be the same

yea but it also stops it running back along bottom of sump and dumping drips everywhere:tt2:

So, the story so far.

I have drained the oil, and my plan is to use a cheap oil initially so as to flush any remaining old oil from the system.

As it has been standing over night, should I turn the engine over without firing her up so as to get the oil circulated? or will I be OK just to start her up?

I am just worried that for the first few seconds or so, there will be no oil circulation until the pump develops the pressure.

Also, if I should turn her over first, what is the best/easiest way of preventing her from firing up?

it will be fine .. Just fill your oil filter with oil .. and fill the engine up to the correct amount

and start it up .. Dont rev it just let it tick over for a few mins and u be good to go

As you said Mark, started with a very slight rattle and then as quite as a mouse after that.

My only dilemma is, I have done this twice now, and the drained oil is only partially clear!!

Looks like a long and expensive transfusion so as to get her running with clear oil. Still it has got to be worth it.

you will never get the old oil out m8 regardless how many times u flush it ...

as its all over the place in there

anyways glad its all ok for u

OK Mark. Cheers.

I have enough oil left to do one more flush and then I will drain and refill with the good stuff.

Tempted to go with 15/40 semi, or should I just stick with the 10/40

I don't do many miles and she is garaged in the winter, so tolerance to low temperature is not to much of an issue.

Just worried that the 15/40 may be to thick for the turbo's at initial start up.

My 300 like yours is garaged all Winter well most of it. I use 10/40 oil and never flush it out first when changing the oil just get the oil nice nice and warm and let it drain. Stick on the drain plug fill the oil filter and screw it on and fill her up check for leaks job done mate.

Cheers Gary,

Hopefully I will be ably to do the same once I have got the oil to a reasonable condition.

It's just that I am ashemed to say,:blushing: I have left the oil change far to long, and it is as black as your hat.:mad2:

dosnt matter if the oil been in there for 500 miles .. it will be black as black can be m8 ...

your panicking a little ... its how it feels and smells that matters

Yeah, you could be right there Mark.

I will have a smell/feel of the old oil in comparison to the new tomorrow night. ( not that I know what I am looking for that is, lol)
