Hello forum, I want to update the oem 2 piece prop shaft and from my research it seems the way to go. I also found on many other zx forums it is common practice to replace the stock one when the centre bearing wears. Whats been bugging me is that among some zx owners and particularly a prop shaft rebuilder I chatted to say thay they have experienced vibrations with a one piece and do not advise it.

Anyone on the forum with a one piece "steel" prop shaft care to comment on theirs?

Mine has had a one piece on it since I've had it (over 2 years). I've had no problems or vibration from it. I can see why you might think there could be issues with them, I've wondered about that myself!

I've also got a steel one-piece and I do mostly motorway miles, mine has been fine... no bad vibrations.. :)

my one was from ZedWorld, who have them custom made and balanced, I know others are available from the USA ( in aluminium as well) but I can't comment on any of those.

The "prop shaft re-builder" you spoke to, does he do the single piece shaft or does he just rebuild the two piece?

This isn't a DIY job and getting one made without being properly balanced would be as bad an idea as getting new tires without balancing.

I think it's important to find out exactly who is complaining about a vibration issue and where they got their shafts.

 

So, just to clarify, there is no way I'm going to advise you to go for a single piece shaft without knowing were you're getting it from and consequently how reliable they are.

I have a SWB lightweight one piece prop from Zedworld. It been fitted for two years now with no problems so I can only recomend them.

Thanks for the comments guys, really value your input........I feel alot more comfy now and will go this route. There are a number of prop shaft specialists here in my area however I am going to wait for my replacement manual box to arrive before I haul the exhaust and prop out.

Can the prop specialist use my 2 piece for overall length dimensions or do I need to give him a length and if so anyone know the dimension?

I have just asked Jamie at Zedworld to fit me one of these, as well as a lightened flywheel. Propshaft 9kg lighter an eliminates vibration apparantly...

not sure if 8 inches is enough for a prop shaft (even with two pieces) :)

I was chatting to a propshaft fabricator about this, he said the issue with one piece vibrations isn't that you feel them in the cab it's to do with an increased risk of damage to the drivetrain from vibration frequencies travelling along it. Gearboxes can suffer and it can go through as far as the crank in high RPM applications. In a 2-piece prop the rubber damper around the centre bearing absorbs the vibrations hence why it's there. His opinion was that a lightweight 2-piece is the way to go for a performance gain without risk.

 

Personally i've never heard of anyone having problems with a one piece so will be getting one myself for when it all goes back together

 

Gibster-TT on here has a lightweight 2 piece, not sure where he got it from or if it was a custom job
