Every so often when i go to start the car (usally when theys people admiring the car)it does this auful screaching noise i think it could be the starter motor but not 100% its been doing this on and off for nearly a year now but laterly its more frequent. If it is the starter motor any ideas how much and could a novice change it ?

Hi,

Could also be your power steering drive belt/pump.Try turning the wheel once started, and see if it stops.I have a similar problem sometimes.

Mine had a crunchy starter, £300 for new starter. This was due to time constraints and I have no other car to get to work in, otherwise if you have the time, check the starter solenoid on the top of the starter motor. Check for continuity using a multitester (Disconnect Car Battery First) if you don't have any it's probably that. A cheaper thing to try is to lubricate the moving parts of the strater that throw out the cog this could buy you some time as I heard it's common for starters to get stuck this way.

The starter is easy to change but SE did mine as part of other jobs so it did not really notice on the final bill I got.

Screeching sounds after car starts can be fan belts or waterpump. Mine is in today for a new waterpump £79 part & upto 4 hours labour.

Good luck with your car.

Eddie ;-)
