There was i jacking up the rear of the car to place some blocks underneath to raise it by a few inches when... well from the before and after pictures you can see what happened.. lucky i wasn't underneath at the time.. what was underneath was my 3 ton trolley jack which is now jammed into the ground with a 2 ton car on it!!

Yep, jack a car up from the rear when It's already on ramps will cause the car to move backwards and fall off. As you've found out.

Hope the damage isn't too bad mate.

This happened to me a while back, zed came off the front ramps while lifting the rear and was heading towards smacking into my garage wall. Luckily I managed to get between the zed and wall and stop it doing any damage to the car. Hurt a bit and I don't recommend it, but saved my zed.

To avoid this either use axle stands at the front (car will pivot quite happily on them while jacking the rear) or lower the front back to the ground before jacking the rear up.

Wow - I'm glad you weren't under the car at the time mate!!

Second that!! Rev1richie what were you thinking? the ground is not stable enough to risk your life and your car.

perhaps the paving slabs could of been used under the ramps, looks like you lost a few inches height just from shingle movement...not worth risking it, but glad your in one piece

Hope there is no damage under there.

Check that for dedication.......

Guys, i want to thank you all for your kind words of concern and compassion, as soon as it started to move i was out of there in a flash.. only trouble is, as i said, it trapped my trolley jack underneath, it was sideways at the time so it buried the rear wheel, about 6 -8 inches of steel and a wheel into the ground, so i cant just pull it out!. I've just realised, the top picture was an early one, i have since then put slabs underneath the wheels to stop the car burying the ramps. Those bits of wood were there to put under the wheel to give me 3 -4 inches of lift at the back. trouble was, to get that lift, first the car needed lifting past the suspension travel, Thats when it started to slowly move which is when i split and watched it come down. Steams, i see what you say about the movement of the car during jacking, i suppose that a feature!! (bug) of using a large trolley jack, its linear movement as it raises is backwards, so maybe axle stands would tip as well? yes/no?? I suppose in a garage environment, the jack would have rolled forwards as it went up, unfortunately, shingle doesn't let the jack roll...

Anyway, the main thing is i'm okay and ready to try again, once i dig out my trolley jack....

Regards

Rich

Trolley jacks raise and lower the load in an arc. If they can't move on the floor as they do so then they will pull the load itself, either slipping

off the jack sadle or pulling the other end of a raised car. Always use them on a smooth surface so that they can move when in operation. Axle

stands can and do slip or topple in this situation.

Could have been worse but this has made everyone aware of the potential risk so at least something good came of it. I've been lifting my car with a small jack before on concrete and a small lip stopped the wheels rolling to compensate for the arch of the lift, luckily I noticed the base of the axle stands start to tilt off the ground.

I then went out and bought some of these which made me feel a whole lot safer http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cax-6tbc-6-ton-axle-stands?da=1&TC=SRC-axle+stands

that is a shocker! whatever it was you were trying to do to the car under these conditions - isnt worth it.

They're the ones I've got bud, rock solid aren't they..

f**k me some poo would definatly come out if that was me, near miss matey!! just as well it came down slowley and you had the chance/the sence to leg it i bet theres some people out there that may have tryed to stop it from going and ended up a smear on the gravel

Yep, I bought a cheapo pair from Wilcos when I first got my Zed thinking they would do fine but were absolute sh1t, the second I put mine down on the new ones I could see how much better they were and feel much safer working under it. Go really high as well.

Those Halfords ones are only 3 tonne Mark and probably don't go as high as the Clarkes. Still do the job though!

Was talking to my neighbour few weeks back , she always asks what i am doing, out under various cars on my drive , real nice lady , often chat for few mins , anyways she told me a sad story , her brother died doing the same as above , she still hurts over it , all i can say to Richie is BE MORE SENSIBLE , YOU ARE VERY LUCKY , that goes to us all as well.:mad2:
