Turbo abnormality?

I've just had a close up inspection of the pair of turbos that are sat on my workbench and there seems to be a bit of a difference inside in as much as the one propellor looks to be smaller than the other?

both move freely with no play whatsoever but this one looks to be slightly larger

looks more like the cover housing has been milled out to much

as it should have the shape of the comp blades like the top pic

get some calipers and size up the internal hole on both ..

damage no .. but Performance yes ...

for Fans to work effectively they need to be sitting against the tube

so the air is not thrown away

what i would do is take the comp covers off and check the size of the comp wheels and holes

see if there shaped the same or size

from the pics looks like different comp covers .. for 2 different A/Rs .. or its had comp wheel replace with not the correct one

Oh really another ztech job .. nice

Another job that I could have done without!

Cheers for the info mate, no doubt I'll sort this in the next year or so then

I have to say I agree mark, the bottom one doesnt follow the impellor curve properly. I am thinking though.its gonna have to spin alot faster to achieve the same effect as the other and therefore will burnout much faster.

Won't be selling these anytime soon then!

Right I've just checked with a digital caliper, one housing inlet measures 47mm across the other measures 53mm across....WTF!!!

oh dear .... so idealy a new cover plate is needed

i would still take them off and inspect the comp wheels just to make sure thay are the same

they are different to the standard t25 flanged inlet ...

think some where along the line turbo has been rebuilt due to ... cracked housing ... incorrect one fitted or done wrong at the factory ( would of thought so )

might be worth having a chat with craig at crturbos, he really knows his stuff and they do mod turbos in house so might be able to help you source a replacement front housing

Will do mate, I'm really going off this whole VG thing though :hammer:

I'd just like an engine that if something go's wrong I know that I can pop the bonnet and get access to whatever I need to get access to, this whole engine in/engine out *****cks just to change some turbos is not ideal

I helped my mate work on the SR20 in his PS13 a while back and that was fantastic, you could have pitched a tent in his engine bay and got your head down, with the amount of room that he had! With this bloody VG I couldn't even see the friggin turbos without having to shift a whole pile of piping and wires.....

i know theyre a pig to work on campared to other cars but the vg is a bloody good engine. tbh if you went down the rb or jz route its still gonna be cramped in there and although you wont be pulling the blocjk to do a turbo you will be for something else there so bloody tall esp in a z32 chassis. and although they have the amazing rep they do there is still no guarantees.

I would say the compressor wheel is wrong too,the clearance down the side is massive in the second pic,and is the nut missing ? get a core from Z1 mate,be cheaper.

Jimmer the cover plate inlet Holes are different size too 47mm and 53mm

Yeah i read that matey but which pic is the right one if you get my drift. Is the first the larger or the second ? is the first one smaller with the wheel the right size or the second one smaller with an even smaller wheel ??

its the way the pics look ...

but i would say Top pic smaller intake hole Correct t-wheel

Marty popped by earlier and took a look and we believe that the housing in the second picture has been machined. There are quite a few dodgy things going on with this particular housing, with a few bodged de-threaded holes and a bolt inside the inlet (I knew about that one from my previous quick inspection) but a few more odd things have been pointed out today. First off I'm going to source a replacement housing with the correct 47mm inlet and then go from there. Both impellers have nuts on though..
