Anyone non mechanic pulled their engine before????

Hi I have Nissan 300zx and I am thinking off pulling the engine out to fit my GT2860 tubs! Other than a PCV kit replace and an airfilter I haven't performed any kind of mechanical work on my zed, so has anyone on here ever taken their engine out??? Just want a bit of feedback to see what i'm up against

They may look like a mine field but pretty easy really to take out, once it's out you can simplify a lot of the pipe work ect, and change the bits that are hard to get to with the engine in

The main thing if you have never done it before is to label pipes and bolts up and take plenty of photos along the way as if it takes longer than expected you can refer back to the photos, and everything else will be labelled

If your handy with a tool go for it

I'm quite a methodical person so i'll colour match pipes to fixings, pictures are a good idea

make sure you have all your Fitting kit for those turbos inc Down pipes

all so it would be wise to get some new Manifolds to flow better some thing like the AMS ones in the group buy

oh and you will need to Make a Recess in the drivers side chassis rail due to the Larger turbo

it will be against the chassis :)

did it on my own on my driveway, its not easy but do-able,

as said above label everything, and make sure you use the right bolts when putting it back together,

your not far from me, so if you get stuck can always come give you a hand... :thumbup1: cant do anything with mine till i get my new engine finished anyway.

ah thats interesting, I was told that GT28 would fit with no modifications with regards to space?? Also the compressor housing and turbine housing do not fit the Z32 on the tubs I've got!! So I need to get a pair of 5 bolt down pipes to fit my tubs and exhaust and use a silicone hose to fit the compressor as i'm told on stock gt25 there is a a 2 bolt flange on compressor wheel?? Does this sound right?? I have bought these turbos and was told that they would fit my car but have since discovered they will not which I was not happy about!! So there is now further modification needed just to make things harder.

I'm also thinking of selling these turbos and buying some that will actually fit my car so if there is any guidance on there of where from i'm all ears

Just when might be the issue...

im in haywards heath,

got any pics of the turbos? best place to get 5 bolt elbows in the state either Z1 or CZP

most Nissan have a 3 hole mount on their standard turbos compressors (or at least used to back then) some of the lrg turbos conversions do use silicon though like this one...

wow missed 4 posts n the time it took me to write this...

Mark how much of a recess did you make for the 2560's? I've knocked mine in a good few mm if not more

think it was about 5>10mm once this was done it gave about the same in clearance

as my tub was on the chassis rail

can you show me a good pic of end that fits turbine housing so I cann see if they will fit my tubs turbine housing

  • Author

Am i right in thinking that the compressor housing can also be adjuisted to fit correct angle as my ones are not the same as stock T25's

As you can see by the Pic with the tubs side by side

Comp Inlet bolt holes at different angle and different stud patten for the comp outlet

You will need to rotate the housing use your standard tubs as a guide, you'll then need to get the actuators to fit, the 5 bolts will fit your exhaust housing

I've had my engine out a good few times, although I am a mechanic, I did it in my home garage, I find the only ball ache being a small guy but a grafter, is getting the gearbox out on your own without bending/stressing things, straight forward enough, just basically remove everything attached to the engine, undo the mounts and lift out. The first time I bought a packet of multi coloured tie wraps, and put green to green, red to red etc, but if you run out of colours, then do red and green to red and green etc.... And watch out for the spring clips on most of the wiring loom plugs pi55ing off when you unclip them, you'll know what i mean when you remove your first injector connector, royal pain in the arse them things, but they the same clips/plugs are used on many other cars, so if you lose some (and you probably will), no major trauma, just take one down to a scrappy and have a rummage.
