Erratic Tickover

Hi,

Could anybody suggest the cause of a suddenly erratic tickover.

We're talking about somewhere between 700'ish (normal I think) and about 12-1300. Doesn't really seem to be related to the running temparature of the car, but it does seem to be getting worse.

What I'm wondering is a) do I have some electronic gadget just about to die on me (not good!) or b) whether it could just be something sticking and a job for some carb cleaner down the appropriate orifice.

It's not related to turning on/off aircon or anything of that ilk (as I think there's some sort of regulator for this), because it happens even with the heater controls firmly in "off".

Oh yeah - I don't know if it's of any consequence, but the car's a 94 UK manual.

Any advice welcome, chaps/chapesses.

Cheers.

Sounds like the auxiliary air control valve to me - aka AAC wink.gif It is located on the back, passenger isde of the upper intake plenum. If you look down the passenger side of the upper intake, you will see the air feed running to the back then round to the aac valve. Pull the rubber hose off the AAC and squirt a damn good dose of carb cleaner in there. Replace the hose and hey presto.

Another possibility is the Throttle Position Sensor aka TPS smile.gif There are some techs around on how to adjust this - try http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnetfaq/FAQpages/hesitate2.html .

Other people may well say clean your Throttle bodies. This is simple. Pull the main boost hoses off the throttle bodies, spray in some carb cleaner and scrub with a toothbrush smile.gif Don't forget to open the throttle plates while you do it though wink.gif Once you have cleaned the TBs though I would recommend flushing the aac as above as the crap gets washed to the back, clogging it wink.gif
