Auto Box Rebuild

Another Auto box bites the dust, anyone know what the average price for a rebuild is?

Featured Replies

Mine cost me about £1000 for TC, etc to be replaced. Oakdene Automatic Transmissions in Nottingham did it, 1year/12000mile warranty and they have sorted an oil leak and a failed spacer under that warranty so seem to be ok. Another I was recommended is John Mackie in Glasgow, used by Nissan UK for warranty work on auto gearboxs. http://www.johnmackie.co.uk/about.htm

Mine cost £600 for the box and £130 for the convertor plus VAT.

12 months and 12,000 mile warranty

AGS in Watford did mine in about a week around Crimbo time last year.

1200 squids which was a soft rebuild and exchange torque convertor. 12 month/12K miles guarantee.

Best advice is to fit an aftermarket gearbox fluid cooler if you don't already have one asap.

249 squids and 50 squids for fitting at SE Nissan.

You can get them cheaper though and not a major job to fit as far as I'm aware.

think i hold the record for this, a smidgin under 2 grand, full recon, new torque converter, 24000 mile 2 year warranty. job done in under a week.

new one from nissan was around the 2800 mark i think but with only a 1 year 12000 warranty.

I must add though that ive been 100% happy with it so far.

Whats this soft/hard rebuild stuff?

Mines in at the moment....sorry for lack of tec knowlegde....but then again I can destroy countries from 4000 miles away........

How the fcuk do I know mate? LMFAO biggrin.gif

When was the last time I rebuilt an autobox! biggrin.gif

Only joking.

As far as I know inside the complex contraption there are loads of rubber bands and clutches and cogs and fluid to keep it all lubricated and cool.

Basically me rubber bands had snapped and me clutches were toast!

Torque convertor was none too happy either so an exchange item was used.

Mine just started slipping off junctions, you would try and pull away in drive and the revs would hurtle skywards to about 4K then after about 5 seconds you would get slow acceleration off the line.

Bit like a manwell clutch when that starts to slip I guess.

My guess is that a 'soft' rebuild is basically a service and they fix bits that are obviously broken. And a 'hard' rebuild is effectively a refurb where they replace all the parts that are likely to wear, as well as the broken bits and give you a longer guarantee.

I've been quoted £1500 for a full rebuild, with 12 months warranty

Seems expensive but if its local then you don't have delivery costs sonot so bad I suppose, but that depends on whether it includes a new TC or not. Check what they include in their full rebuild don't assume.

A 13 row Mocal oil cooler and all pipes/brackets £82 for the parts including delivery from www.thinkauto.co.uk

I think that the difference on the builds depends on internal damage. With mine they replaced all the bands, clutches etc and made some changes to the oil flow. This was a normal recon. None of my gears etc were damaged. If other mechanical parts are damaged, you will have to pay for those on top of the recon cost.

That price includes a new TC and taking the box out and putting it back.
