Hi guys,

I got an original 99spec front bumper today 3wks of waiting lol.

It's new and never been painted, any tips on how to paint it,

got someone doing it for me, but unsure what to buy, last bump the paint cracked when towing car the rope chipped some paint and then it started chipping more and more.

Someone said u get stuff to put in paint to make it flexible, and special primer.

What order would Do they go on.

Also another paint question, putting some stone chip in my rear arches can I stone chip over old stone chip or do I have to remove it all.

Any help appreciated, thank u.

99spec bumper is polyurethane and is quite flexible. Normal the painter would put in a plasticser or adhesion promoter, but the plasticiser is only any good to give time to fit the bumper, it wont necessarily stop future paint cracking.

Any plastic/poly painted bumper will crack if hit or knocked on a kerb for example. Jason Farrow had something in his paint or laquer to help pervent this, but cant remember what its called. I think its like a clear sheet of something lol.

Primer is nothing special although using a sealer will help first, not sure on the stone chip, never used it myself.

Just my thoughts but you really need to get the painter to tell you what you need as he surely knows what he "should" be doing. Is it someone you know and trust? The first place who sprayed my car a few years ago skimmed my polyurethane bumper with normal filler and when the guys at Custom Exotics saw it, they told me straight away the bumper would crack all over the place - it did :( Now I may have a bumper that requires some major work to save :(

Yeah painter is my bro in law painted my car few times and paints really good,

it's only when my last bumper was painted, while later my cambelt broke,

and we dragged it back home on a rope when we turned a couple of sharp corners rope rubbed on bumper and it peeled of then it got worse flaking more.

I just don't want it to happen again and I'm gonna pick up paint etc,

so if I bought other stuff I'd order him to use it lol.

Seems maybe I just have to be careful, just don't wanna run over a slightly high curb and end up with paumint flaking everywhere on my new bumper.

Cheers for the replys guys. I just have to trust him.

why not get a list of what you need from him if he paints for a living, he's bound to know the best stuff to suit your needs then ;)

Great I will order some with paint.

Just need to get some side skirts from car mad

Saving up.

With the 99spec spoiler from u should look good,

I hope lol.

Got him painting whole car again, pulling engine cause I chipped engine bay a bit putting engine in.

Gonna rebuild engine why it's out.

Lots of work, was a clean car now looks like a scrapper on the drive.

Was hoping to sort of know what I'm talking about,

so I can tell him what to do,

and give him the stuff

he paints for a living, but my last bumper peeled in places though it may not be his fault cause had paint below his and that came off too.

Mines White, had red underneath but left the bumper looking yellow which is probley the bumper itself.

Hi Terry, pretty sure you will need an etch primer for the first coat.

Paul

Good point Paul, forgot to mention i did an etch primer coat first, but mainly to cover the filler patches initially, then i got carried away and did the whole thing.

When i had my 99 spec painted a few years ago, the guy used a plasticiser and had a great finish, but as per, started flaking along the suage line, then i bumped a curb and hello split

This is what I'm worried about, rest of my car seems ok no peeling just the front bumper.

I have a dent in the back where I reversed into my van lol and the paint is still fine there it's a metal part of the car.

Reading on google there's stuff called bull dog,

and they talk about buying stuff that makes paint more flexible,

I just don't want it all to peel.

Etch primer is for application to bare metal only. It has an acidic PH to "etch" it on to the metal to assist bonding.

TBH I dont normally bother as modern 2K primer had pretty good adhesion itself provided the metal is properly keyed.
