im about to get into djing, of course wil be doing indian music so getting bookings should be alot, easier, infact i already have 2 confirmed for next year. ive been practising on virtual dj and ive been doing well BUT its making it all to easy and also hard to do 2 things at a time and i also want to learn 'scratching' not my balls must i add lol..

i used to dj 10 years ago with 1210's so im oldskool but heres my list someone i know has some pioneer cdj1000 mk3 with a djm 400 mixer all boxed second hand for 1200 pounds is that good enough? ill be connecting these upto virtual dj.

ive seen alot of 'EV' speakers and bins at the parties ive recently been to how good are they?

i need some speakers good enough for a garden party so say around 100? people what do i need?

If you are used to DJ'ing on 1210's then i cant recommend the DZ2100's enough, fantastic DJ CD decks, get a decent amp and mixer and if you want to run powered speakers, that are small yet punchy get some JBL EON powered speakers, You only really need two for a large room, but you can always add 4 more.

The Decks will give you full control over your CD's including digital scratching, cue'ing is the same as any set of 1210's in fact you would be forgiven for trying to place vinyl on them, they are that damn good. the only down fall is they are quite large to accommodate the wheel on top, that also spins like a vinyl set of 1210's

Ive been using them for 5 years now and they are the best of the best as far as im concerned. though when i first got them, they cost £1200 each. but as time has gone on im sure you can get them cheaper than that.

Anyway link to the SLDZ1200's

truth be told, every dj is different and prefer using what works best with them. obviously vodkashots loves his sldz's so they are what work for him.

i work with alot of dj's and some have tried the sldz route but found them very awkward to use and so traded them in for cdj1000's.

I'm not guna tell you what to go for as it's up to you, but there is a reason why pioneer are the industry standard decks, it's because they are the best. they are expensive but you get what you pay for, just like everything in life.

as far as EV (electro voice) speakers go, they are a very good speakers but a little bit on the expensive side. for a lot less money you could go for the lesser known alto's. these are very good quality speakers for the money, i test various speakers every week, from mackie(absolute shit imoa),jbl(very good),rockford fosgate(not as good as they used to be) etc but find that the alto's are a very good all round speaker.

also you may find that traktor or serato will be much better software to use with them, most of the people i know use traktor, as do most of the big name dj's.

Ive heard the same, but mainly from DJ's who start mixing with CD decks rather than coming from vinyl to CD's, agree that the CDJ1000's are good decks as ive had to use them sometimes when you go to a club / pub who have their own set up its usually the CDJ's as thats what most use, so have had a good time using them.

SLDZ's though, once mastered are awesome decks, and a lot easier to use coming from vinyl than most people think.

Cdjs are industry standard because they came out first and everyone got used to them, bought them and now expect them. Denon were just to late with the dn5000 which does far more and i prefer over the cdj1000. Technics were even later with their offering. I think if people hadnt got used to cdjs, but had gone straight from vinyl to the technics cd players then thats what everyone would be using.

Incidentally cdj1000 are discontinued and the replacements are cdj900 or cdj2000

Speaker wise i quite like RCF art series or turbosound milan15

Thanks guys for your help and advice.

ok guys ended up getting some decent second hand Pioneer cdj 1000 mk3 with a DJM 400 mixer. so i now need help with how to connect these up to my laptop to virtual dj?

what version of serato do i really need as i see versions 1-4?

Edited by indian_zx

i've been in the dj game for over 25 years and own 1 of the dj supply companies featured on the web (not sure if i can post a link?) as said cdj's are industry standard and for time code to run vdj are okbut most cd decks would perform the same when used as time code, vdj is very good to (i am biased use it myself) version 8 is just around the corner and promises many new features.

mackie are good but there are a lot more brands than just them i would suggest listening to plenty of rigs and make a choice depending on your budget, don't buy the new jbl eon range though! slight inside info here on eonsthey currently use a auto sensing circuit to set the voltage when you plug them in I.E 110-240v unfortunatly they don't fit a crow bar circuit should the system not detect the voltage quick enough, so in a lot of cases these are getting plugged in, they don't sense quick enough and the power supply goes bang, lots of ££££'s to fix and no fix yet been released by jbl

you need a 4 in 4 out sound card such as the maya 44 which will allow you to have 2 stereo channels out and 2 stereo in, the time code cd is downloadable from the vdj site also i think there is a good write up on how to set it up with timecode on the vdj forum

Thanks guys for your help and advice.
