Valves seals

I think my valve seals are on the way out (smoke between shifts and at idle)

how much of a bitch are these to replace?

i reckon it is possible to do them in situ (as long as you can physically get in to do them), but is absolute git.

It relies on you have pretty perfect sealing of rings and esp valves as you pressurise the bore (with a compressor via the plug hole) to keep the valves from dropping whilst you compress the spring to remove the collets.

If your valves don't seal then forget it, but if they dont seal then you may as well get the heads off to recut the valves and seats anyway.

Also relies on you having a spring compressor that doesn't act on the bottom of the valve (like most).

Jezz.

we do mercs that way, just not sure on zeds

my dad can do them in situ in escorts apprently, instead of a compresser he packs it out with string,

i dont think id trust that on the zed though,

it hast smoked at all today, maybe it was just the change to optimax.

Unless you've got very high mileage then I'd think it's more likely to be the turbos than the valve seals. So I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you.

new turbos installed 40k ago. not sure about the other internals. She appears to have stopped smoking at the moment though.

It might be worth checking when the PCV's were last changed.
