Hi,

Ok, getting blue smoke out of ONE SIDE (only so far) of the exhaust (tt).

I know its not a good sign and looking at diagnosing the problem.

It’s ok on start up but after a minute or so it starts to smoke, just a bit and then stops, if I rev it a bit (obviously not a lot) it’s quite evident there is blue smoke coming out.

When driving it only comes out sometimes, just a slow amble and seems ok but only need to put my foot down a little and puffs of smoke some out.

If I put my foot down there doesn’t seem to be much or any but then again when driving normally it comes back.

I only recently changed the PCV’s (9 months back) so I don’t think its them.

I’ve been running 5W40 (up to a shot time ago) but never had this much smoke.

I’m going to pull the TB pipe off to see if it’s oily (from a possible turbo issue).

It would be the valve stem seals but how would I check that?

It could also be the rings but again how would I check that?

So, what else could it be?

Cheers.

I have exactly the same problem, blue smoke on tick over from time to time, from one exhaust, only started when I changed the oil to fully synth 5w40 , new pcv pipes and valves fitted still the same, I'm going to try semi oil slightly thicker, I think the fully synth is bad for the turbo seals on old turbos, if you get to the bottom of this let me know! My friend works for Nissan and is a master tech, he doesn't think it's turbo seals but is unsure where to go next, he thinks pcv system or wrong oil.

5w oil is pretty thin tbh, it could seep past your old seals. Change to a 10w and see what happens.

Pre rebuild, mine was similar, started on one side but eventually spread to both. When the engine was stripped down there were no OBVIOUS signs of why it was smoking, but it had been combusting oil (burt residue on the piston crowns) However, the valve stem seals were dry and fairly brittle, so they looked like the most likely culprit

Hope you find what ever is causing it

My engine has had a full rebuild wieco pistons and eagle rods, will be trying different oil, 10 30 or 10 40
