Whoa, semco, watch out for rolling roads.

JVN had his engine self-destruct on one a month or so back.

Even though I did mine a couple of years ago I wouldn't do it again unless I was utterly convinced that the place had experience of running modified Zeds on their rig.

Be careful with it, mate - you only just got it (oh, and welcome to the madhouse, BTW)

Cheers - Gio

Good luck and hope it all goes well!

Personally after what happened to John and a few other horror stories I ain't going near one unless I have to.

I don't need a rolling road printout to tell me that my car is quick. wink.gif

Grin on me face does that! LOL biggrin.gif

"New York's such a wonderful city. Although I was at the library today.

The guys are very rude. I said, "I'd like a card." He says, "You have to

prove you're a citizen of New York." So I stabbed him."

ok i took it up and im not a happy man the computer said it should be 283bhp and 37.5kg torque mine is 260bhp and 41kg of torque but it was filled by the dealer with normal unleaded and i asked what plugs they put in it and they said the ones we always use from the local parts place so i phoned them and they say that the dealer always buys the cheapest plugs, oil and filters so do you think this could be the problem?

ps i asked the dealer if they put octane boost in it with the normal unleaded but they didnt know what the stuff was

thanks

what mileage do you have ?

if it just has an exhaust, and the 260 is the power at the wheels then those are pretty decent numbers.

The 283 in the book is a the stock power at the flywheel and not at the rearwheels...it's more like 210 at the wheels.

how much boost did you run ?

semco32,

find yourself a zed specialist mate, these dealers can be real bad news. you need someone who knows their way round a zed to do your work otherwise you will be putting your hand DEEP into your pocket mate. where do you live?, perhaps someone can point you in the right direction.

steve

hi i live in edinburgh i dont think there are any Z specialists here but the power output was at the flywheel and not the wheels i think

semco32,

Check out the Z club website at zclub.net and look up a guy called Malcolm Yule. He lives up your way, is well knowledgable on TT's and should be able to send you to a decent tuners.

If you cant find a number for him, let me know and I'll dig u one out tonite when I get home.

zcar

I pretend to work, they pretend to pay me!

Mine gave 258 bhp at 6416 rpm. (no mods at the time - running on normal unleaded.)

Since then I learned to put the best poss petrol in (esp because it's a J import) so super unleaded at worst but usually Optimax.

Eric, I always thought that my figure of 258 would have been at the wheels as at the flywheel should be around 280?

But while typing, I got curious so just rang the place and they said that they would usually give the figure at the flywheel - so where's my 25hp gone? frown.gif

Then again, they said that they had had to have their rolling road re-calibrated a couple of years ago so my figures were probably inaccurate.

Semco32 - glad you got away with it - better check with rolling road people whether at wheels or at flywheel.

hi gio it was flywheel but i was also reading the post about big exhausts dropping power output but i find it strange that my torque is up but power down another post says that unleaded can cause the car to run on safety boost could these perhaps explain the power because the car done 2 runs the first at 260 and the next at 230 but i took my 200sx up a while ago and it read 180bhp then i fitted a dump valve and took it back and they done 3 runs 1: 167bhp 2:113bhp and the 3rd at 149bhp so it could even be the rolling road but everyone says its the best one in scotland its at carscan

sorry lymon the mileage is 44,000 but it has no history so i cant verify that

thanks

Paul

if you had the wrong fuel (

Or.. the intercoolers were seriously heatsoaked (but with stock boost this is not very common)

-Eric

Ive seen it said here that the auto is down 20bhp on the manual tho not sure if true and torque is higher at lower rpm. Also if yours is an import it can be tuned for 100 octane fuel. However if it was detting it would go on safety boost and I would doubt you could reach anything like 260 on safety.

Also Z's should have platinum plugs standard that last around 50000 miles and according to my service records cost about a tenner each a couple of years ago!

Beware rolling roads can give wide variations even on the same car depending on whether it is hot dry weather or cold damp weather also if your engine and I/Cs and pipes are already hot at the time.

Willie

sorry i forgot to mention its a manual if it makes any odds

I think heat soak of all engine components can affect the HP output quite substantially.

This may account for the up and down figures you recieved for your Z and 200sx.

I only use the brakes so I can accelerate all over again.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/dunk300zx/ For awesome car & bike mpegs.

well i think before i start on any mods im going to get a proper service on the car with all the proper stuff and fill it with optimax hopefully that will help but hey 260bhp is still a lot of power :-)

Also take a good look at your air filter. Its under the centre panel between the lights. If its well dusted up you know what strangled your horses!

Willie

Guys

Sorry to appear stupid here but what is 'optimax' and what RON is it. I've just been filling mine with ordinary ESSO SuperUnleaded.

it's basically a higher ocatane fuel. Normal unleaded is 95 I think, Optimax is 98.

Vijay

Sling optimax in a search on this forum or on any search engine and you will find loads and loads of posts

It is a Shell brand with (according to Shell) between 98 and 98.6 RON ultra low suplhur.

I like it and I don't work for them!

Hehehehehe. Very funny.

Yeah I use it too, you can feel the difference.

Also I can vouch for the air filters. When I got my car the filters where covered in crap. I changed them and again I could feel the difference and the engine ran smoother.

Stuart

i dont know if this makes sense but i had used over half a tank of the unleaded so this morning i filled it up with optimax and about 5mins later it felt like i was running nos or something i took it back to the rolling road again and its now putting out 287bhp is this possible i got them to do it again and the same 287bhp again can this be the optimax or has someone been tuning my car while ive been sleeping?
