I've forked out on two different types of degreaser and neither of them have touched the thick dirty/oily/greasy parts of my engine. The first was some autofactors own brand stuff and the second was GUNK, that I was assured was 'really good'. It's not. What do you use that's good and preferably can be used on paint so it doesn't strip my engine bay?

Muck off is pretty good, or you could make your own, have you never watched Kim or Aggie lol. Anything with lemon juice, white vinegar, washing up liquid should be pretty good.

I just use swarfega or washing up liquid. May need to wash a couple of times to get it all off but not really a hassle.

Vods has some citrus orange gritty stuff that works really well. Can't remember the name though :)

LMAO @ Steams

Cheers guys, im going outside to try this absolutely foul smelling concoction Groover just suggested and if that fails some petrol as that is all I have to hand right now

Well Groovers concoction worked alright but I can't deal with the smell. Mac the petrol worked a treat and Richards suggestion made me try white spirit which worked equally well and is probably cheaper lol, slapped it on with an old paint brush and wiped off with a rag:thumbup:

I tried everything I had in the engine bay and it all striped the grease off along with all the paint back to bare metal lol. I can only put that down to alot of the crap in there being caused by power steering fluid which I think is corrosive to paint, is that right? Not an issue as im degreasing to spray it anyway but got a shock when that happened anyway:surrender::laugh:

Mark did you clean your engine mounts with the Jizer to get them that shiny in your build pics?

I kid you not the very best thing for getting it off your hands is washing powder, it's abrasive and a powerful degreaser. I bought a big pack of Harris decorators gloves from B&Q for about £7 which is the best option IMO, they are pretty tough, have plenty of powder in them so you don't get sweaty and they are ideal of covering pipes, turbo inlets, zip tying around oil lines etc to stop debris getting in unwanted places

Used to use TFR alkaline substance to clean engines. Gets the job done in one session, spray on, blast off with high power washer. Careful of electrics and plugs etc though :)

Yeah I was just looking on eBay at that link PZero posted and other TFR's, they seem to be the best value for money if they work, although I can see 5L of white spirit being ample to do what I need to do

Got some degreaser made by Astonish from my local Charlies store (one of those places that sell everything) and its really good and as cheap as chips.

Someone said about washing powder for cleaning hands........also good for flushing dirty coolant systems and rads!..........stick a scoop or two of washing powder in with clean water and run the engine for 10 mins or so then drain out and flush through with clean water from a hose........much better than 'proper' coolant flush stuff. :)
