Hope no body minds but i need some advice on behalf of a friend who has an issue with his 2.5 TD Pajero

Turns out he was pulling a caravan up a long and steep hill, suddenly out the exaust comes plumes of blue and white smoke , he pulled over and found the engine now empty of water, tried to turn the car over on the key , and it did but very very slowly, it does not run ,turnover or try to fire ,

any thoughts as to what may be wrong

1) head blown

2) piston meltdown

3) blown turbo etc etc,

any advice gratefully received

Yeah they are pretty renowned for crap headgaskets. If it was struggling to turn over and the battery is good then it was possibly heat seized. Did he not notice the temp gauge going up?

apparently he did not notice the temp going up, he did notice a huge puff of blue and white smoke at which point he pulled over, the engine was under massisve load and stress as it was chugging up a very long and steep hill with a caravan behind it ,but now it seems that he could not stop straight away and had to continue for 5 mins or so to a suitable stopping point , if it is just the head what would it cost to refub and skim the head , if it is more serious than that how do it tell ??

Not sure of the cost of head skimming tbh. If it was driven for 5 mins pulling a caravan with no water there's a big chance it's more than a blown head gasket. Fill it with water, check the oil level and see if you can get it started is where i'd start

it now turns over but really really slowly, it has two fully charged batteries connected to it so the slow turnover is not due to lack of electricity

Like I said ^^^^^ bores/rings etc knakerd so tight and struggles to turn over :(

Yeah I wouldn't waste a penny trying to fix that engine just get a new one in there or scrap the vehicle and buy a new one. What year is it?

If it's in good nick then might be worth getting another engine put in but you still run the risk of the same thing with those engines and it's grief sorting it out. I think it's the same TD engine that's in the Delica and they are well renowned for it as well. Personally i'd just get a newer truck if money allowed but that's just my opinion, hope he gets something sorted ok

The 2.8 TD is the Delica/Pajero engine I was thinking of earlier, yeah they have the same reputation. When I spoke to some off roading mates about them when I had one they reckon the cooling system isn't up to much so any extra strain on it caused by blocked rads/collapsing hoses/ the air con rad that's in front getting clogged with debris reducing airflow etc they get warmer and blow a head gasket and the heads are pretty prone to cracking as well.

If he swaps the engine i'd get new hoses, new rad etc as well

Not sure you're right on that Eggs, the 2.5's are known for the head gasket but the 2.8 4M40's are pretty bullet proof is serviced properly ;)

Plenty of info here :) http://www.pocuk.com/

Worked on shogun/pajero few yrs bk changed head gasket,

sure I remember somthing about ceramic parts used on the heads,

Try taking the glowplugs out and see if it turns over faster, may have water on top of a piston and hydro locking, or water could have bent a rod.

Goodluck.

Not in my experience and try finding a well serviced 10-15 yr old 4M40 from a breakers yard.....
