Hi All

 

My speedo drops to 0 some times and then coms back OK. The steering is OK , (I saw some other posts), so what is my problem then

 

Any ideas pls

Its actually your speedo not working. Happened to me about 6 months ago. You can try to take it apart and resolder the joints. Hopfully it may just be a dry joint. Other than that its a new speedo needed.

 

If its a Jap it could be the speed converter, but I think it tends to affect the steering

Yes its a jap import , but i do not have an idea where the converter is? Hope to be the speedo joints, Is is difficult to take the speedo appart?

No. Few screws to take the dash out, and then 2 screws and a dew clips to take the dial pod apart

if resoldering the joints will not do it whats the best (chipest ) way to get a replacement by post (new or 2nd hand?)

Unfortunatly you cant get just the dial its self, and not many places will just sell a dial and its workings because that means they have half a pod for sale.

If it is the dial, the best and cheapest way is to by a second hand pod set. They are around £100. Nissan wanted £360+VAT for a new one :S.

 

I think it is the dial cos there are no other problems which are associated when its speed converter or speed sensor.

 

The problem I had was the needle would just drop to 0 and then maybe after a while go back to normal. Sometimes it started working when I hit the top of the dash. Soldering helped it at first but it got worse and worse till it never worked. But I read on a US site that for some people resoldering worked.

 

Any way in the end I got a new pod from a scrapper in Manchester. Mine is a 91 but this was from a 93 and the connections didnt fit, but I could take out the dials from the new pod and put them into mine, and everything worked.

 

Also I do believe if you get a UK dash, it will then work in MPH and so will the trip and odemetre.

hi i would still put my money on the speed sencor i had a problem with my speedo for about a week only showing above 40 then not at all then fine then up and down and a week later no speedo . it drove for about 8 miles showing no speed and then lost power steering 2 mins later hicas light it was the speed sencor

How common is the problem, can you predict... I have had this problem on two zeds and both times I cured it by removing the instument cluster, tightning all the screws/contacts and cleaning all the plugs/sockets. As a test, remove the two screws that hold the instrument pod cover/hood in place, drive to a car park, drive around till the fault occurs - continue driving, but pop your hand in behind the speedo and start pressing the area around the back of the speedo and anywhere else you can reach! You may find you can create/fix the problem by doing this - and in doing so confirm you just have a bad connection/joint somewhere.

My speedo does not work most of the time and suddenly comes back for a couple of minutes and goes dead again.

OK - so drive to a car park drive around with one hand behind the instruments - pushing here and there to see if you can MAKE your speedo respond. It's gonna prove out the same way. Just dont do it on the highway/motorway man!!

 

BTW - have you had the dials changed for white or similar, or have the needles been removed from the gauges for any other reason??

Yes my speedo has been opened because a kilometer back has been added (glued on top ) to make the speedo read in km rather than in miles.

I assume you just mean a sticker on top of the current gauge - but if you have had a new gauge then Bingo - the guy who pulled your needle to change your gauge broke your speedo!

 

He pulled the whole damn needle, not just the pointer from the needle - It is very difficult to recover from this scenario!!

 

At the base of the needle is a small splined section, this has to be correctly located within the unit to 'float'. Yours is not. I bet that [with your ignition off] your needle is not free flowing - if you flick it gently with your finger does it take off - or is it sticky? You can mess around with trying to 'pull' or 'push' the needle back into its free floating position - but you will be very lucky if you do! And if you do - it may not be as accurate as before.
