Weird problem...

Since I got my old Rover back on the road, the Z is now a weekend-only car. The fuel bill's a bit more acceptable now.

However when I start it after a long rest all week, it sounds (and feels) like there's a cylinder off. But when it gets up to temperature it's OK again.

The Conzult power balance test says everything's OK.

What could be up here? Any thoughts? Could it be the power transistor?

Ta.

Have exactly the same problem every morning ... still haven't found the source of it though. Any thoughts much appreciated.

A dodgy injector can sound like a dodgy lifter.

If you want to check it, disconnect the injector. If it's the injector making the noise then the ticking will stop. If it's a hydraulic lifter then the noise will remain.

It's a difficult test because the engine will sound different with the misfire but it should work.

My guess is a lazy tappet, they all do that after beeing of the road for a while ..and it's not something to worry about, unless it doesn't go away after a 20 minute drive.

If this is the case you can try to add a small amount of ATF to the engine oil and see if that helps.

Do a search for tappet, knocking noise!

Hope this helps, it has happened to all of us at one stage or another, and can be an alarming experience - especially if you take it to a Nissan garage and ask there opinion!!!! (Please dont do that).

Thanks for the feedback, Andy.

It's not really a noise - it's the fact that the car is trying to shake itself to bits when I start it! It calms down and runs reasonably well when it hits normal temperature (except for mild hesitation).

Having said that, I started it without problems today after a week's rest...
