Today is the day we are finally going to paint our Barcelona Banger. I have loads of quality Autoglym aand Zymol shampoo's but wondered what would be best to use prior to hand painting the car. Ordinary washing up liquid perhaps??

I tried to get hold of some TRF but failed so it is literally getting washed dried and painted :surrender:

I'll update later with pics but any advice appreciated. I paint and decorate for a living but have never painted a car lol :surrender:

you shudda asked pal!!! i cudda sent you a couple of litres of sod all :-)

just get a bucket of water & some wet & dry paper and flat it down! Then go over with some panel wipe.

it will take off all the grime & allow the paint to adhere better

This should be interesting, are you using coach paint or kitchen emulsion?

I wouldnt use any shampoo or washing up liquid. its greasy and paint wont stick to greasy surfaces. it needs to be perfect. prep work is the most important part of spraying.

I did a full body respray on something a couple of years back got a DA, and used 800 grit all over to remove existing paint, be sure not to take it back to bare metal, as its treated.

Once that was done, I blew it over with compressed air to get any loose dust of. Then I used paint cleansing wipes, available from Halfrauds, it drys almost immediately.

You might think 800 grit is too harsh, but once you have a nice layer of primer on there, you can go over with a wet 1200 grit lightly by hand, this will make any minor flaws visible, i.e pin holes, dents, deep scratches etc. fill them with a thick building primer, then wet 1200 over again till smooth.

Then your ready for paint :P

obviously spray it all in one direction, not up and down and then sideways, just one or the other for the whole car, or you will get "tiger stripes" in certain lights when dry, it will need a few coats, with wet 2000 grade over the top, I went to the extreme of 3500 over the top after my respray, but it was a car I was keeping.

Don't forget the pics.

My mother in law once painted flowers on her morris minor with purple emulsion, but that was the 70's for you lol

Wot Paul Said +1.

Put plenty of washing up liq in bucket.

flat down all paint. 400/600 will do.

Wipe it all with proper panel wipe to get rid of residual silicne from old polish etc.

Apply paint.

LOL! love the paint bucket with rollers!!

what paint did you use?! Houshold gloss?!
