hi again bud do the mot gas tester machines automatically detect if a car is a non cat test or has it to be put in manually

hi again bud do the mot gas tester machines automatically detect if a car is a non cat test or has it to be put in manually

what is the date of reg on your car?

1994 just been talking to mot centre they say its lambda reading thats wrong its reading 1.8 could be a air leak is this poss

OK - the tester will select the year on the gas analyzer. for your year it will default to a BET test (basic emissions test) which applies cat default limits.

If the car fails this then a vehicle specific test needs to be carried out - as the zed in not in the emissions database there will be no exact match found. As this is the case a non cat test needs to be carried out.

Full details are here in a write up I done years ago: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?27060-MOT-emissions-test-on-a-zed-(cat-test)

that lambda reading is waaaaaaaaaaay out (if correct - I suspect it may be 1.08!) lambda readings should be between 0.97 and 1.03

look for a high O2 (oxygen) reading - although not part of the MOT most analyzers will show this & will usually be quite close to 0% maybe as high as 1% - a reading of much more than this will often be seen with a large air leak.

cheers budd so if it had been tested as non cat with a figure of 1.08 should it have passed

yea - lambda readings are only applicable for a cat test - as yours should be tested as a non cat vehicle after it has failed the BET test the tester should go on to do a non cat test just looking at the CO & HC readings.

requirements for a non cat test are:

Non Cat Test

CO

HC

Sorry to be a pain but even if they type in the reg number and continue should it tell them its a non cat test or is that a testers decision

iirc tester needs to advise it. as system auto does it based on needing a cat

nope - nothing is automated - the tester will need to know to check in the emissions database for an exact match after the BET test fails - if he cannot find an exact match then you manually set the emissions tester for a non cat test.

This is the problem - you do not often have to do this & most testers are not aware so simply fail it!!

cheers for that bud i just need to be clear when i go in

one thing i did notice on the screen was a drop down window after he put the reg in he clicke on poss 1 of 3 choices any ideas on this dont know whether all garage sofware is the same or not first time ive done a mot for some years your help is much appreciated

yea - the options will be the year ranges, so the tester will select the test based on the registration date of the vehicle (in your instance 1 aug 1992 & 31 july 1995)

this will select the emission test values specific for your year.

If you click on the link I put up in post #7 you will see a flow chart - look at this & it should be clearer. This is what the tester should follow

just looked at the pictures in the link - for some reason the pics are the wrong way round - click on the right one first - this is the first BET test part & the pic on the left shows the flow if the car fails the BET test :)

so let me get this right even though he selects the correct year the z32 will not be there so he must be using some other data to test it against eg z33 to get a lambada reading becase the z32 should be non cat tested because there is no exact match

Yup - or he has just done the BET part which it has failed.

so it would go like this-

tester enters car details & selects the year range to test (1 aug 1992 & 31 july 1995)

the first part of the test is a BET (Basic Emissions Test) which applies default cat limits

if the car fails this then it should go on to a vehicle specific test

tester needs to find an EXACT match in the emissions database (posted above - we know there is no Z32 in there)

if there is no exact match (which there is not!) then the tester performs a non cat test which is:

Non Cat Test

CO

HC

if the car meets this then it passes

as said - see the flow charts from VOSA on the link in post #7

easy peasy really as long as you know what you are doing! :D
