can i correct an inaccurrate speedometer?

i have checked my speedo, and as people have said on here, it's absolute pants. When the speedo is reading 120mph my GPS says i am doing 112mph. Can the get the speedo calibrated?

yes, but you'll have to take the speedo cluster apart completely.

There is a small electronic adjustment screw on the speedo, that allows you to adjust it

There are a couple of possible alternatives. If the car is a Jap import and the speedo face has been fiddled with then the needle may have been put back incorrectly. Also, if you have km/mph converter box they also have adjustment.

Mine currently needs correcting and what I have done is drill a small hole in the top of the speedo casing, then all you have to do is take the dash cover off and you should be able to twiddle the screw whilst driving !

Not tried it yet though...

Mine becomes inaccurate at higher speeds. But there is one way of looking at it. You should never really get done for speeding. Cos if you are doing 35, a bookable speed on normal roads, you will in fact only be doing 32 wink.gif

Except I bet that you mentally take that into account and actually do an indicated 40 or whatever. I know I do. There is no substitute for accuracy.

my car is a uk model, 1992 TT, i find it is pretty accurrate upto 50mph, after that it steadily gets worse, speedo reading of 90mph is actually 85mph, and speedo reading of 120 is 112mph.

andy can you put a photo of where you drilled the hole? i may do the same as i dont want to take the whole unit apart and then put it together, just to find i have to take it all apart again.

cheerz for your help guys

Don't have a photo available, but if you take the speedo assembly out you can see the little potentiometer that needs adjusting and it will be really obvious where you have to drill the hole in the white plastic casing.

cheerz andy, will investigate

E-mail of detailed instructions heading your way.

Don't need to remove speedo cluster, just need to drill a small hole (in the right spot)
