I was poking around my engine bay trying to fix one problem, only to discover these two venting pipes going to the turbo which looks like the turbos water feed. Is this some kind of mod or do i have a white elephant Z

Ooh, that doesn't look good! I don't know much about the turbo but it's defiantly not a mod I'm afraid :( The turbos wont last very long at all with out a water feed. Don't start the engine until it's replaced.

Looks to meet like they should be joined together if they have been like that when the cars running I'd expect there to be coolant everywhere!!!

you need the water feed on the tubs ... but have u been loosing water at all ?

yes i just broke down because the water had run out, lucky for me the engine still seems ok....

 

one of the rubber pipes is blocked off (which i assume was going to the turbo) as seen in the picture, so i wasnt sure if this was some mad mod.

It looks like a plastic joining piece inside the bottom pipe to me, possibly snapped causing you to lose all your coolant

will be getting my hands dirty again this weekend then. starting to miss my little ca18det engine (never thought i'd say that)

Not surprised there a shed load easier to work on than the cramped vgs lol my guess would be get a new nylon pipe joiner and plug the 2 ends together

but if i plug them together how will the turbo get any water!!

some one has done some sort of water bypass inc the turbo/s ...

as return pipe isnt connected as well ...

u need to have a look if the other side is like it

The tubs wont suffer with no water,they are designed to be water cooled but the heat they run at it would never make a difference anyhow.Ive seen quite a few zeds running with deleted water feeds and they never seemed to suffer from it.If you can get it connected but if not dont panic.

Whilst that is correct what Jimmer said, for those that run aftermarket bigger or different branded turbo's, in many cases water feeds must be connected. In fact good ole SE Nissan from years ago seldom did.

Check with turbo manufacturer or supplier if in doubt with aftermarket tubs.

 

When companies send out turbo's depending on which type/brand it is, they will often put a notice with it stipulating water feeds must be connected.

 

Just didn't want to see peeps think this applies to ALL turbo's.

That's the point, if they stock then yes you can. If aftermarket then some brands/types you can't or really shouldn't.
