I just wanted to know if it would be better to remove the splatter sheild which is under the air intake.

Thanks

Do NOT remove it !

Especially if you have a K&N-type intake.

It's there to protect the intake from sucking in water.

Talking about filters:

With the car I inherited a 'Ramair' induction system, looks ok and fits in the original air box, but it needs cleaning every four weeks or so. When I first looked at it 6 months ago I couldn't even see the logo on the nylon. Are these any good, or should I change to a more mentioned make,

as I'm running out of 'Ramair octane wax'

which came in a box of bits with the car.

Which I bet I can't buy on its own.

My personal preference are the K&N-type intakes.

They're made of good quality materials, they last forever, even Halfords has cleaning oil for them and they give you a nice bit of extra power !

Downside for the UK/Euro-specs is that you'll have to remove the headlight-washer reservoir.

I have the SE twin filter mod.

It's tight down there but I have run them for 15K without having to replace them. I think it's £60 for both to replace.

The SE kit leaves the splatter shield in place and has a shield against the leccy fan.

K&N sounds interesting but I wonder what the max airflow is against SE for example.

My filter is totally clogged because the guard was taken off before I got the car.

Tried cleaning but it's so full of grit I can't get it looking clean.

Eric,

How good are the K&N jobbies, reason for asking is that I've been enquiring about filters for my Merc Cossie recently. I didn't think that K&N were in favour for the Z with everyone going on about Blitz, HKS and JWT twin POPS etc.

Is K&N a good bet then?

Might change my mind as they were the pioneers after all!

Tim, the Jim Wolf and Stillen intakes are basically rebadged K&N-filters.

I've had K&N's on most of my previous cars and never had any trouble at all.

Performance-wise the difference between JWT, Blitz, Stillen, Apexi, Greddy, HKS-filters is minimal.

There is however difference in actual airfiltering.

The Blitz-intakes appear to give the most extra hp, but filters very poor.

The foam type-filters (Greddy, HKS) seem to break up fairly easy in time and soak up water.

The K&N-types (K&N,JWT,Stillen) seem to do the best job at both power-increase and filtering (and they are cheap also: $100)

The Apexi is a smaller filter and is somewhere in between the Blitz and K&N's

I've run both the Silvia system and JWT (i.e. K&N) without the splash guard and never had a problem. That's over a period of 2 years and it was my daily driver so saw all weathers.

I'd suggest keeping things cleaned from time to time but that's a 10 minute job (just remove the panel between the headlights and check all is well - it's two 10 mm bolts).

I have used the Uni-Filter reusable foam filter for nearly 3 years with no splash guard and not a single problem. They need to be cleaned and re-oiled every 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers but that is an easy task. I haven't, as another member posted, found mine to break up over time and due to its oil impregnated nature it can't soak up water. I have recently been given a HKS filter to try by my sponsor who is the local Stillen and HKS distributor but I've only had it on the car for a couple of weeks and can't comment yet.

i have removed my splash guard when i fitted my green filter induction kit, i dont intend driving through 2feet of water either to test it out to wether there is a problem or not.
