One for the experts me thinks, my UK spec 1990 model was decatted some time ago, engine, turbo's and gearbox all rebuilt 30,000 miles ago, now having fitted a new Blitz exhaust system 6 months ago the motor smokes when i come to a stop at halt signs or slow right down. It never smokes under hard driving only as soon as i've just put my foot on the clutch. So ami looking at built up back pressure, which is easily resolved or is it the dreaded seals in the turbo gone and they are releasing drops of oil into a hot manifold when the compressor wheel has slowed down causing the smoke, any help would be appreciated, this is highly embarrasing to say the least, cheers Smithy i.o.m

If it is a blueish smoke then it's most likely the turbo-seals.

It sounds like the company that did the rebuild, didn't do a very good job..

 

Anyway..this is what often happens when you remove the cats and is a pretty common thing.

Because the backpressure becomes less the turbines start to *wiggle* and this will increase wear of the seals.

Are you sure its not steam? With some aftermarket exhausts the back mufflers fill up with condensation unless you are giving the car good hot runs to dry it out. I notice this in very cold weather. Once you brake hard the water runs up the pipes to a hot section and loads of steam appears especially at lights and junctions.

Thanks guys, now to make things worse the car seems reluctant to start, giving a few pops now and then and little puffs of smoke, is this confirmation of oil seeping into the manifolds ??? It starts eventually and needs a few revs to clear and runs fine until engine warms up and you come to first halt sign and wooff clouds of smoke, what do ya think ??

It's unlikely to be turbo seals causing starting problems. There may be two separate problems. If however the 'smoke' is actually steam then there's a possibility of it being a head gasket problem and that could affect starting.

 

But don't be too downhearted yet - there are a hundred explanations for the problems you descrive. I'd suggest a checkout from a good mechanic.

 

Be cautious about doing lots of driving though. If it's head gasket then you want it fixed before doing miles otherwise you're in danger of getting water in the oil which can be nasty to engine internals.

 

Hope it's something minor though !

Cheers, it's defo smoke and smells oily, pops a few times when starting too, just found a vacum hose off going to bottom of throttle body, up to now warm starting is fine, will see how things are tomorrow morning, thanks anyway.

If you haven't replaced the PCV-valves, do it first.

My PCV-valves opened while braking causing oil + crankcase air to be sucked in.

I think Maciej said it best ... Check your Rear Crank seal it might be OK depends on how long a PCV has been stuck and in what position but it tends to show there first - deffinatly replace them - the job aint the nicest you can do but it is DIY altho a bit fidly. If that dont help Im afraid it might be time to check your compression.
