Metal head gaskets or not?

I spoke to a tuner yesterday and on running through the mods so far, he expressed concern over me using ordinary head gaskets and not replacing them with metal ones. He commented that the std Nissan gaskets were only good for upto 14.5psi and to use boost over that would require metal head gaskets and also suggested lower compression too. Can someone with a detailed knowledge of the 300zxTT engine please comment on this as it is the first time a tuner has mentioned it and I have spoke to a few in the past days. Having just had the engine put in really don't want it back out again any time soon. Thanks.

I read a ver good post on TT.net about tuning.

I remember reading that he said that the Nissan paper/card gasket is better than a metal one. The reason is, a metal one will start leaking after about 3 years, while the paper ones will last over 10 years and can stand the amount of force.

If you get a thicker metal head gasket, it will lower the compression rate anyway.

Thanks good read.

If you are aiming to reduce the Comp Ratio then it's better to fit lower comp dished pistons and use std thickness Metal HG.

Or if you can't be arsed with that use a thicker one and std pistons.

Lowering the compression is a good idea if you are intending to run high boost (prevents detting etc...).

If your pistons are not forged then you could well run into trouble at high boost anyway.

Don't go for Metal Gaskets!!

I agree with Stuart on this one , use the standard paper head gaskets they won't leak, better to use lower compression pistons instead. I've read few posts on TT net advising that the standard paper ones are better

If you want to run high boost, without the head gasket giving up, then there is another option. Ask the guy to wire ring the block.

This cuts a small groove around each cylinder, and then you insert a gas filled wire. Then the head gasket (paper) goes against these, and as the engine temoerature rises the gas in the wire expands and creates a tighter seal.

This is what the Rally guys use.

I also read on tt net that lowering the compression is only necessary if you intend to run above 24psi. I would go for wire ringing too, head gaskets are a job you dont want to be doing on a regular basis on one of these.
