Boost Controllers

Whats all that about then ? ? ?? ?

I understand the basics and am looking to get a decent electronic boost controller but I'm worrying about going pop.

The stock ECU listens out for knock/detonation and then reduces the max boost to save the pistons - right?

(OK - so theres O2 sensors, fuel quality, temperature etc etc to think about as well)

But does anyone know if any aftermarket boost controllers sense knock to adjust max boost ? ?? ?

Anyone got any experience of this, or advice on which controller to go for.

Cheers

an electronic boostcontroller will partly bypass the safety feature of the ECU.

The ECU will still switch to another fuel/timingmap when it senses knock, but it won't be able to lower the boost anymore (this feature is also known as safetyboost), since the boost is now controlled by the EBC.

As far as I know there are no EBC's that are able to interact with the ECU, so it will lower the duty cycle when the ECU senses something's wrong.

Although Maciej (aka Zviking) made a little electronic device that warns you if the ECU switches to safetyboost, so you can manually turn off the EBC.

I think the schematics are on his website (www.z-car.net)

£189 quid p+p ouch......

Wouldn't it be possible to just wire in a dash lamp to the engine knock/det sensor to do the same or is that too simplistic?

How does the det sensor work?

The detonation sensor is a piezo-element (a bit like a small microphone) and not a switch that will turn on/off.

So you can't wire a lamp to this sensor.

The ECU actually "listens" to the engine using this microphone/sensor.

As soon as it "hears" detonation or pinging it will switch to safetymode, which is a more conservative fuel and timingmap and it will switch the stock boostsolenoids, so the boost will be 7psi max.
