Extremely light steering

Hi All,

Wondering if anybody has any ideas?

Bird and I tried each others cars last night and it was very apparent that my steering appears very light.

Also on the long sweeping bends it often feels like the steering is doing its own thing. Hard to explain, but you are holding the corner and it feels like the back end is sliding away, well more like steering as they tyres are gripping..

Thought it was my imagination until Bird thought the same thing..

Mine is doing the same on the rear end and it only happend since the new wheels went on. So i would say its the tyre brand.

As for the steering i would say mine is to heavy and you have to fight to get it around bends. but i like it as i can feel everything the car is doing or about to do :)

Its weird to explain... ive been looking through the threads on here, its bouncing out or anything like that.. just feels like the back end is steering itself...

i would prefer the steering to be heavier...

Could still have worn hicas rod ends? when one of mine was worn, it felt like the car shuffled when i went over bumps like horizontally left and right. It was the wierdest feeling.

Ill get them checked cheers...

It is a weird feeling... it doesnt hop about though, feels as if the back end is not following the front end, but only on bends...

Ill have to see if Lee can explain it any better for me now hes driven it...

Maybe it is the fact that the HICAS is actually kicking in,

I believe it becomes active after certain speeds and in my limited experience does feel as though the back end is drifting,

but in fact it is enhancing the over steer.

Must take some getting used too.

You could be right mate.. My steering wheel is also on or two clicks out and was when i bought it,

after reading the threads this can also alter the steering so will put that right tomorrow as welll

Birds car just felt much more planted and he had oem springs and shocks as well..

That's what I meant sorry it's my arse about face way of saying it, do you think your hicas kicking in and birds hicas broken or locked out therefore not steping the back out?

Could be.. Might have to find another close by I can have a drive in...

when i had my zed chris(uno) drove it and he said how my steering was much heavier than his. i put it down to his being a TT and mine being an n/a.

That could well be your problem mate. The steering wheel hub houses sensors for the HICAS; hence it must always be bob on the straight - always important when having the wheel allignment done!

Get a full PROPER 4-wheel allignment done on the car - it will make a hell of a difference - although if your HICAS joints are worn, have them replaced too (it's an MOT failure)!

Also light steering could be a symptom of speed sensor failure too; IE the car thinks you are travelling slower than you really are so lightens the power assistance.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Richard, straightened the steering wheel today and yes it has instantly made a difference.. Cheers...

New wheels going on during the week and track rod ends and then in for the wheel alignment....

Great stuff mate - it is quite amazing just how bad the car can handle during high speed corners when the wheel is off centre!!

Out of interest, would a datascan/conzult bring up error codes for the hicas and speed sensors etc? Just thinking it would be worth popping down with it to check it on there.

Also just to confirm mine is all working as it should etc.

Datascan, Conzult, ECUTalk and a few others

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

Bouncing/Hopping tends to be due to worn rear shocks, but a wandering back end is typically Hicas joints.

Poor alignment settings can also give strange handlign sensations.

Other than that, light steering can be caused by the fitment of a mph>kph convertor - It tricks the ECU into thinking your going slower than you are (eg. 30kph, instead of 30mph) and unfortunatly this means the speed sensitive steering runs on lighter settings at higher speeds than it would normally.

Do you know anybody with a conzult local Lee?

Fixed the HICAS behind the steering and all sorted...

Drives like a completely different car now... I actually like the HICAS now....
