PS it's been quite fun trawling through all the old gearbox threads with Macca & Kirbz throwing their views around :)

I'm asking as my syncro's are gone, and thinking if it's worth getting a gear kit or just refresh the box with the new type syncro's. Also, even with the gear kit, how does that protect the syncro's to stop it happening again?

I have the os giken gearbox which I believe kirbz had first then sold it on to it's previous owner. It has longer gears for 1-3 iirc. I am running the leader gears diff also, so I think that what I gain from the longer gears I lose because of the diff but I ain't no technical wizard and am sure someone will clarify this!? All I know that 500bhp and this combination is great fun!

No grinding. I am going to be moving back from a short shift to stock shifter as I don't like the feel of it but don't think this has anything to do with the box.

I was looking in to the ppg straight cut gear set but its way to expensive at the moment for me. Would like to know of anyother opsions?

Maybe cryogenicly freeze the standard gearbox parts. A friend done the same with his gtr box and has never had a problem since. Before that he done 2 gearboxs in a week.

What I'm trying to figure though is do we actually need the gears, I've not read of people breaking the gears on the 300, just the syncros.

Gtr's break the gears a lot, but they put a lot more pressure on them due to the extra traction

If the syncros can be frozen i would go with that. If that fails then id consider the mega expensive route of HKS, Os Giken or Ppg setup.

Ive heard good things about the cryrogenic process

Probably worth checking out the z1 short shifter, apparently it is really good. I have an eBay short shifter and it sucks

Get a 98 box new from z1.Its by far the cheapest and best bet.Martins car had one and it survived no probs. The 98 box had a revised 4th syncro i believe.

It's a Z1 one that i have! I just don't like the feel of a short shifter.

lol, that's exactly what I'm looking at now as I reckon it's cheaper to buy the whole box than to refurb!

shirt lifters are shit imho, the zed stock shift is close enough as it is and feels precise. How anyone thought it needed improving is beyond me tbh.

The shift on my shorty TT is stock and feels way too slack as i have been driving a short shift for some time now. I will definately be changing it in the next few days

wanna sell it?

Will give you a shout Big C when I take it off. I have a lot of jobs to do very soon including swapping the shifter, swapping to coil overs, installing 2.5" piping throughout the intake and intercooler system and finishing boot install!

that should take you up to lunchtime then? :)

I got a 98+ box from the states cost me £1300 plus duties :) it's been fine though I don't kill it on launch just in case :)

Agree with that they're shit

There is a company in Austrailia that does a straigh cut dog box if you want to go mad. No synchro issues ever if you can live with the noise.

Will see if I can find the link when I get home

that'll be PPG, don't think I'm ready for straight cut gears though!
