think iv opend a can ov worms here

i do like the vg engines

i wouldn even consider this if the oppertunaty for a very cheap rb hadnt come up

but weel see what happens some serous planning an headachs ahead

as for the vg vs rb engines i think if its the vg30dett then its not a viable or worthwile swap but as mine is a N/a then its more than worth while

its not THAT much cheaper. Still 6 pistons, 6 rods, 24valves, 6 injectors ..etc The only saving is that 1 Big turbo, manifold and ancillaries is a little cheaper than 2 smaller turbos....if your after a dyno queen. Also, In some cases RB parts are charged at a premium because of the "skyline" name.

...and you also have to take into account that mod for mod the 300zx makes more power and torque than the RB !

Then when you factor in the cost to buy an RB in the first place and all the fabrication and hassle getting it fitted.....then its not as cut and dry as many seem to think.

Building new is always going to cost a lot regardless of whether it's an RB or a VG, however for a guy on a budget, a genuine 700+bhp RB is a lot easier to come by in the UK than a genuine 700+bhp VG.

My appologies in advance for going off on a tangeant here but I'm factoring in more than simple component costs in this RB vs VG debate

If you want to mitigate against possible future catastrphic engine failure (therefore additional cost), statistically there are more RB specialists in the UK who have built 700+bhp RB's to a tried, tested and proven specification than equivelent specialists that have built un-proven performance VG's. Then of course there's the associated costs of component change/fitment (engine in/engine out) each and every friggin' time.

The fact remains that the zed community, especially here in the UK, are in their infancy when it comes to building performance engines compared to the equivelent Skyline/Supra/RX7 communities respectively, and therefore there is a lot more risk (and therefore associated potential costs) to pushing the VG's boundaries.

I am fairly content that I could go onto GTROC or Skyline Owners Club and source an already built, substantial 'proven' RB engine far easier (and cheaper) than I could here or on any of the 300 forums. I'm not saying that there aren't a handful of half built, dorment or simply canned performance VG projects that are now on the sideline for one reason or another, which in thoery at least could push big figures but at what cost?

I'm simply suggesting that component costs aside, I'd be far more comfortable in the knowledge that RB Motorsports, Abbey Motorsports or TR Racing etc had built and put their name to a performance RB build that I was considering buying (simply because it's been done time and time again), rather than theoretically sound VG performance build to an experimental specification, that is to date un-proven.

I'd be interested to see how many 'I'm considering putting a VG in my GTR' threads have appeared on GTROC over the years (though I'm sure there's one somewhere)?

Like I say, my appologies for digressing into associated costs but it's all relavent in my view

It bugs me when the say the VG is unreliable and over heats, Ive been on here for 5 year and have only known of one zed with a blown engine and that was marks with a conrod and 600hp, Also I have never heard of a zed over heating????

Iirc rocket rons Gtr kept blowing up after ever totb it ran and needed a full rebuild??

When i went to a dealers to pick up the BMW the guy asked what i drove and i said the 300zx. He said oh has it blown up yet??? where has the zed got this reputation from??

I think they're making reference to when a zed is running big power figures or for track use

- 600bhp and throws a rod on track

- 600bhp and melts a piston

- 700+bhp and owner accepts that it needs a full engine rebuild after 3,000miles as a matter of course

Genuine big power (700+bhp) VG's just don't exist (or a very rare) in the UK so not surprising that they're not seen to be overheating that often. It's like with any car, as long as it's driven in the manner that it was intended and every vital component is operating effectively, then you shouldn't have too many dramas hower...when you try to take it on track when underbonnet temperatures start to rise considerably through inefficient airflow and/or melting of the wiring loom, then you're going to have dramas clearly

I think Bob has taken every pre-caution now to make sure that his is ready for TA this year, so hopefully his will prove that it is possible as long as certain precautions are taken with regards to additional cooling and protection from contact/overheating.

and rocket Ronnies was putting down around 1000bhp and giving some full on abuse at TOTB, therefore routine engine re-builds are an accepted part of the game in the same way as drag cars requiring re-builds after 10-15 launches etc. I'm sure, that his block would have needed to be re-built several times throughout the year.

right guys

a wee update on this

decided to get my deposit back

n before you ask he's already got a buyer for it..lol

any hoo been reading up on the swap and the cons outwayd the pros ie i dont fancy havin to cut bits of the subframe

just gona enjoy the n/a for what it is and if it comes up im gonna spend the money on a vg30dett lump that will fit.. if n when it comes up

im not to disapointed to be honest

theyr was a guy on the rbz32 forum that had done it

he said it want a hard swap..but toyota in a nissa just doesnt seem....natural

Don't tempt me, nearly put an rb26 in my s14 fair few yrs back now. I am allot more sensible nowadays. The engine I have is just fine :sweatdrop:

too true !!!!!!! very happy with it ! won't think about desecrating my Nissan with a 'Supra' engine ...... much :innocent:

Vh45de is where its at.

or maybe a VQ30det (The 3.0 V6 that the z would of received it production had continued past year 2000 - More modern, lighter, revvy, stronger - single turbo but could be twin turbo'd)

just out of interest what gearbox would you use? and i have done a engine conversion before and there is a lot of cutting this and make this buy this etc soon adds up.

it would be the rb gear box mated to the z32 with some choping

but the xmember has to be notched to to fit as well as fabing the rb25 oil pan to fit the rb26

In my humble opinion, I'm not totally sold on the whole VH45DE conversions mate, I'm pretty sure 'Thor' offer these as package conversions and every one seems to be a bit underpowered for what it's potential should be (mostly around the 300-350bhp mark), though I could be getting confused with the old Lexus V8 conversion??

however the VQ30DET or twin turbo jobbie' would be a good shout I reckon

I've seen the VQ30DET before in a nasty pink Nissan Gloria but couldn't remember what else it had been in, so a quick Wiki:

VQ30DET

The 3.0 L (2987 cc) VQ30DET is a turbocharged version of the VQ30DE. Bore and stroke remain the same at 93 mm and 73.3 mm respectively, and it has a compression ratio of 9.0:1. It produces 270 PS (200 kW; 270 hp) and 271 lb·ft (367 N·m). From 1998 onwards, it produces 280 PS (210 kW; 280 hp) @6000 rpm and 285 lb·ft (386 N·m) @3600 rpm.

It is fitted to the following vehicles:

1995–2004 Nissan Gloria Y33,Y34

1995–2004 Nissan Cedric Y33,Y34

1997–1999 Nissan Leopard Y33

2001–present Nissan Cima F50

[edit] VQ30DETT

VQ30DETT

The twin-turbo VQ30DETT is an engine used only in Nissan's race cars, primarily in the Super GT (formerly the JGTC). First used on the Skyline GT-R race cars during the 2003 season, this engine subsequently powered the Fairlady Z race cars. Homologation rules allow them to use the VQ30DETT in lieu of the stock VQ35DE. Race output of this engine is estimated at around 480 PS (350 kW; 470 hp).

The VQ30DETT was replaced in 2007 by the VK45DE for use in the Super GT Fairlady Z's and later in the GT-R.

It was utilized in the following vehicles:

2003 Skyline GT-R JGTC race cars (Non-Production)

2004 Fairlady Z JGTC race cars (Non-Production)

2005–2006 Fairlady Z Super GT race cars (Non-Production)

Would be interesting to see how many of these are still around

Any of the mentioned engines a straight swap or major fabrication work needed?

Didn't John Dixon get something like 500bhp from his Vh45de engine?

Skip to 2.07 for the action bits and 4 mins for some awesome in car sound
