One dead zed

The car has given up the ghost!

Came back last night from 140 mile drive and it cut out on the drive and would not start for 20 minutes, then quickly did the same.

Tried it after it cooled down and it started and ran fine. Checked everything that I could think of and all seemed OK.

Set off for work this morning, started fine, did three miles then loads of backfiring as the engine died. Spins over fine, just no go (absolutely nothing).

Any ideas?????

Mark, if you've got the old type PTU/ignition amplifier - whatever you want to call it then that's almost a certainty. You can repair it but you're better off replacing...

Oh bugger!

Where is the cheapest place to get one? Is this a call to the States? if so, are there any differences (this is a 92TT jap import).

Mark,

I just changed the PTU on my 91 NA. All versions of the 300ZX use the same PTU. The one from Courtesy Nissan is upgraded and does not look like the stock one on the top left of your engine. It comes with a mounting bracket and a cable adapter to

fit.

I was able to change it quickly and found that it was easier to screw the mounting adapter down first and then mount the PTU on top.

If you tell courtesy you are a member of twinturbo.net they give you a discount.

The PTU has a board that expands and breaks contact when hot. I understand that a good way to test is to pour water on the PTU when the car will not start. This will cool the PTU, if the engine starts then it was likely to be the PTU. But when mine went out, no amount of water would start the car.

one of the contacts inside breaks, pouring cold water over the PTU isnt really a definate test

I opened mine up & repaired it while i waited to get one from courtesy, $157 if i remember correctly

run it for a week with a new wire soldered in without any more problems. woulndt trust it as a permenant fix tho.

Yeah Mark thet is exactly what mine did a few months back after a good hard thrashing.

Get it from Courtesy and save yourself a ton of cash on the £320 Nissan want here.

Mark if you order one tell me and we will order two and split import costs, mine is fine at the mo, but will go one day eek.gif
