Miles and miles

I know this subject is the proverbial "Old Chesnut" but hoping someone can clarify exactly the exact position..... here goes...

If i was to fit a UK TT auto ECU into my jap TT and also fit a UK dash/clocks etc... would i need to change the speed sensor on the gearbox as well? As my speed clock is already in kilometers i assume there isn't a speed converter involved but is the signal coming from the jap transmission unit ok to work with a uk speedo? and....... i 'm hoping that fitting the UK ecu that would rid me of the 5000 rpm limiter and the speed restriction of 112 mph, or is that part of the gearbox electronics? I have already desoldered the resistors on the cruise control box to engage it at higher speeds but i'm also not sure whether i'd need the uk cruise control box as well? Sooo many questions. any ideas peeps? Thanks in advance.

P.S. Craig, just been paid. sending cheque off this week.

AFAIK all the speed sensors are the same.

5000 rpm limit - Eh ? Never heard of that !

Chaing to the UK ECU and UK clocks will achieve what you want.

If you want an ECU chip from a UK TT auto I have a spare you can have.

Thanks Andy, I was sort of sure that it maybe ok to do this but needed reassurance. I think there is a 5000 rpm limiter on the jap models which maybe connected to the the final road speed, got the impression that all jap cars have this which works out at around 112 mph and the only way to cure it is the rechipping of the ecu. Interested in your chip.... or is it the complete ecu? If its the chip, will i have to solder the new one in? (Ooooo) How much for your goods???

Cheers

There is no 'rev limiter' as such because you can do 112mph in 4th and 5th (probably 3rd too!). The ECU has a speed limiter, so it doesn;t matter which gear you're in. If you get one of the speedo converters then it basically makes your speedo read mph instead of km/h and so your max speed becomes 180mph instead of 180 km/h. To derestrict properly you need a modifed chip and UK speedo.

I have a spare chip, not ECU, and you can have it if you want it.

The Uk spec ecu will NOT work with your gearbox, know it cause I`ve tried it!

I thought that you could just change the dials to UK ones and it will then show MPH

You can but the speed limiter is in the ECU mapping.

So.....? Where does that leave us then guys? Jeff, if the signal from the speed sensor is uniform, why wouldn't the uk ecu handle a signal from a jap auto gearbox? I"m not doubting it didn't work, just having brain ache thinking why? Is JWT chip or Unichip the only way to go and keep my original jap ecu and a speed converter box?

Only thing I can think of in terms of the gear changing problem, is that maybe the actual auto box ecu is different according to country??? Maybe you need that as well as the uk ecu???

CheerZ,

Andy

I am running a UK chip in a Jap ECU on my import with no problems if this helps...

More confused than ever? LOL

So maybe it will work and was just "One of those things"......

Who lives close to each other then???

CheerZ,

Andy

I think the chips (maps) are interchangeable, but there may be some difference between the ECU's themselves. Clearly the Jap gearbox is different with extra control circuitry etc, maybe not all of this is covered by the Autobox controller. My Jap spec autogearbox was put into Steve.R's UK spec car using the UK autobox controller, with no probs - so we know that works.

Thanks for your help so far guys..... think i may just try and lay my hands on a uk speedo dial to start with and take it from there, hey, what can go wrong... can always put my old one back if things go pete tong. Didn't think the chips were that easy to swap though, lots of surgery with a soldering iron???

The easiest thing to do would be to get one of the convertor boxes that divides the speed signal and so the speedo displays in mph rather than km/h (you just put a sticker on the face over the km/h). Then the speedo will read to 180mph and the speed limiter becomes 180mph because the signal sent to the ECU is now different. The downside of this is that the HICAS may operate at different speeds. Anyway, that's what's been on mine since it was imported and it's been fine.

Right then, one last question then i'll "leave It"!! Is there a seperate ecu for the transmission, or is it an intregal part of the the Big ECU under the pax floor...... Or...... is it another box bunched up with the boxes under the pax floor?

UK ECU in jap import!

UK Speedo in jap import!

UK Transmission ECU???

Maybe i should have bought a UK car in the first place?

Only joking.... wouldn't swap it for a dairylea!

Yes, there is a seperate autogearbox control thingy. I seem to recollect that it's the lower one on the LH side down in the passenger footwell, but I could be wrong !

Why don't you try the easy option first ? Anyway, I may just have a set of already converted Jap clocks for sale soon ...

I love it when a plan comes together...... right then , the story so far... ended up in a scrappies in Bridgewater this morning where a 94 red UK 300 ZX TT auto that had a serious argument with a motorway barrier was waiting for me to disect! Removed main ECU, Transmission ECU another box??? and the cruise control unit and fitted everything in mine (91 jap TT Auto) except for the Cruise Control box (different plug). Went for a spin and Ulreka, ka, ka, ka!! , everything worked, overdrive engaged when switched, cruise control cruised when selected and the gears went up and down when they were supposed to. As well as that the power mode gave me power and the hold mode held me. So absolutely delighted with success i had to purchase the rpm and speedo dials which have now been fitted, oil pressure and turbo gauges now read in psi and all the needles move!!!!

Just got back from a burn at Budleigh Salterton and... and.... WOW!!! Wot a mota!! A real goer, it's like having a new car. Seriously chuffed. Thanks to everyone concerned, especially AndyP for offers and advice in obtaining my pseudo Anglocized 300.
