Just wondering if anyone drifted their 300?

It's not something I've been able to find much evidence of so just wondering if I'm looking in the wrong place or if there is a reason why people don't...?

My 350z drifts lovely but is worth too much to me to be driven in that manner too often.......

My 300 is also of value to me but isn't worth as much (just before anyone gets offended) :hang:

I get that an N/A 300 has an open diff but is there some other reason that people don't seem to drift these cars?

To me it seems an ideal candidate for the task really???

What do you guys think? :)

iirc It's mainly due to the viscous diff on the zed not really locking up quick enough.

I think drifting is very impressive to watch...but not for me, I love my Zed too much! Having said that...I did accidently drift off a roundabout in the wet when I was running on old jap spec tyres. If I had done it deliberately, I would have been quite proud!...

I hoped that would be the only reason :)

As I am fixing that problem.......

They've certainly got the power to be drift machines. The HICAS might be another reason, but as you know that's easily fixed :)

There is someone on driftworks who has one, and I'm just getting things together to begin amateur days in the summer.

Ha ha they're the best drifts aren't they!

I also get that point of view as I imagine a lot of you guys have had your Zeds a while and become attached, I only just got mine last year hoping it would quench my thirst for a 350 again..... It didn't, but I certainly can't fault the z32 as a car, they certainly are two different beasts when compared though.

Hence why I can't bring myself to sell it :)

So decided I would make it my task to create a bit of a drift toy out of it instead.....

Please don't get that the wrong way though, by drift toy I mean track drift toy, not on road :)

Wouldn't want to tarnish the z32 image :)

Kick the rear out every now and again for a bit of playtime on an empty roundabout :) drifts a treat on shit tyres :)

Should have got a TT mate, you'd forget all about the 350 then

It's your zed mate and it sounds like your having fun, so go for it

I'd be interested to see some videos when you start then grious!

I really think they have the potential to be something good on track :)

Gotta stiffen the ride a little I think before hand though :D

I had looked at tt ones and if it weren't for the bad experiences ive had with the sr20det engines in my two silvias, I'd have probably took a chance on one..... But I had a 350 3 yrs ago and loved it to bits! Can't explain why, just think its an awesome car.

The 300 puts a big smile on my face too though, especially on a sunny day when you can get the Targas out and hear that engine tone :)

Ah I see, I wonder if he has any videos...... :)

I'll have to put some up myself when I get it on track, getting the diff sorted in Feb so should be adding some interesting vids soon enough.... Hopefully :D

Cowpatmatt is drifting his Z32 in BDC this year I believe, and I'm trying to haggle a place for the licensing day in March to get my BDC licence

anyone who says that a Z32 or Z31 can't be drifted is talking complete theoretical bullshit

The Z31 is a heavy underpowered beast; both my NA's were weak (probably about 150 brake tops) but they skidded as well as other big heavy cars with more punch.

Balanced weight saving is essential when power is low

If you can get access to a skid pan that'll save on tyres until you can source a good supplier of part worns

and even better if you can get use of an old RAF airfield or driver training area

Don't listen to some of the lifestyler BS'ers on driftworks, mostly guys who talk drift but don't do it, what I'd call cone heads 'cos that's the extent of their drift experience, skidding around cones in a car park

An old Beemer 325/328 is a good start, or even an old Volvo

Cowpatmatt is probably the best person to talk to right now as he's current, but if you really want to drift a zed I would recommend starting off by getting an old manual Z31 NA!!! not turbo and build up your skill base in that rather than starting out in a Z32; nothing to do with power and handling, purely from a cost perspective because they will break.

My old Z32 didn't even come out to play and never will (the SWB is a different story)

but be under no illusion, they will break and they will need looking after. I had two NA's (of which I blew the engine in one) and I had a tank of an NA that just kept on going. I had a turbo breaker that I robbed for spares and that was a Godsend

in the end though, rust got the better of them

all in I clocked up 17 days of solid skill honing on military training areas, police training areas, old airfields and the skid pan. Admin was a bit of a ball ache, as they had to be trailored everywhere (as both were sorn'd) and of course spare fuel is a must. I have attended absolutely zero organised 'drift days' so no skidding around cones in Chepstow race courses gravelly car park big timing it for me, but I can honestly say that I learnt a hell of a lot more from just getting on with it, getting some seat time and asking the right people the right questions.

One of which is an ex-copper of all people, now working down Weathersfield training the MDP coppers. We had a few days at Millbrook just getting to grips with handling characteristics, it was priceless knowledge.

I had free part worns from work, 16's and 17's which wasn't ideal as the handling does vary slightly (obviously never two different sizes at any one time!) but I had fun, more to the point and it cost me near as dam it nada!

Get on driftworks mate, make sure that you 'search' for your answers before asking and take the big timing attitude of some with a pinch of salt, as the DW keyboard warriors truth be told, can't even drive yet so don't worry

it can be done cheap but you need to do the ground work first

don't go spending big $ on a pro spec/pre built S14a or something daft like that because it'll cost you a fortune just getting to a level where you can keep it going in the right direction (and I've had plenty of moments where my cockiness/confidence level far exceeded my skill level) but on an open airfield it doesn't matter ***DON't STREETO!!!*** if you do then you're a cnut! if you don't welcome to drifting! and if you already drift then you know all this anyway bud...

I am not sure but sure not many people drift the Z.

It is a pretty heavy car, and a complicated engine to work with.

Also quite crowded in the front so not the best to get air in to cool things down.

Not too sure about the front, but I think it might also lack the steering lock needed.

That is why you see so many S-body get drifted as they are easier to work with and have loads of support when it comes to getting the things you need to get the car drifting well.
