I did post something on this last year but it's now worse than ever...OK...here goes...

At ANY speed from 50mph upwards my steering sometimes shakes quite severely. The challenge is that is doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes I can cruise at 70 and it's completely shake free and then some other times I can be cruising at 70 and the steering wheel is shaking very severely!

I have tried to look for speed trends, road type trends, car hot trends, car cold trends and I can't find anything that triggers it! Some journeys will be as smooth as you like and on other journeys I arrive at my destination feeling like I have Parkinsons disease.

To give you the full picture, so far I have done the following...

New discs, pads and caliper overhaul (Zedworld)

Poly steering rack bushes

Japspeed front torsion bars

Japspeed lower front brace (yes I did get it to fit!)

Poly bushes on the front a rear anti-roll bars

New WolfRace alloys and Falken tyres (not new anymore)

4 Wheel alignment and balancing on a brand new, calibrated machine...twice just to make sure

I jacked the car up today and took the front wheels off to have a closer look around (not that know what I am looking for!). When I took the wheels off, I also noticed that the inside inch of the tread on both front tyres is completely bald. The rest of each tyre has loads of tread left on it. I know this can't be the alignment or balancing after having it done twice in the last 3 months, but I suspect it has something to do with the intermittent vibration...

The car is booked into ZedWorld in a couple of weeks to have a new prop shaft (this is preventative and not linked to the vibration I am describing here), so I will ask Jeff and Jamie to take a look when I go up.

In the meantime any help on what to look for would be greatly appreciated as I use my Zed everyday and this intermittent shake is really getting to me now!

Thanks in anticipation...

The fact that your tyres are bald on the inner edge means you have a major toe out issue, jack the front end up and check for free play in the front wheels, if there's no movement in any ball joints/bushes then it's a tracking issue, also sometimes it's hard to diagnose a Knackered ball joint when the suspension is hanging so you may have to get a pry bar in between the joints.

As a quick check for the steering vibration swap your rear wheels to the front and vice versa (providing you aren't running wider rears) if your vibration disappears then you know the cause, don't be swayed by the fact that the fault comes and goes, I've seen wheel balance and twisted tyres cause some Wierd and wonderfully symptoms over the years :)

Thanks SLICKTOP, I will have another poke around tomorrow. I am running wider rears, so a swap isn't possible, however I can put my stock wheels back on the front and see if there is any difference. From memory, I had the shakes on them too but I will try them again tomorrow...

Yes it did. There's not much thread at either end of the centre piece but I have run it for about 6K miles now and so far so good. Hopefully they will do a version with a longer centre which would help considerably.

Good stuff! I might have a bash at putting it on when she's on the ramp next month :)

Do you have spacers on the front wheel hubs?

I have a similar problem. Done the wheel balance thing twice (two different dealers)

My rims are streight as and the linkages are all reconditioned and tight.

The only thing left is the spacer as the rim offet will not fit over the caliper with out it.
