ok its decission time ive got my uk auto tt and i love it but ever since i was about 12 ive wanted an r33 gtr but now theres a problem i cant decide wether to keep the zed and modify it to around the 400 mark or sell up and buy a gtr.

personaly a cant stand the gtrs interior and i love the zed's one its a million times better in every way

power wise i know the gtrs easyer to tune to high power but a 400hp wouldnt exactly be a slouch

gtr has the obv benefit of awd so its gonna be a more stable car im not planning on doing any track days in either car but awd would be nice on wet roads etc

finaly i do tend to go on long mway drives as my mums in cornwall and my bro lives in huddersfield and as ive never done one in a gtr i dont know for sure but id guess the zed would be more comfey

i rekon to get the zed to 400hp id need the manual conversion, injectors, a good map, and maybe stronger turbo internals and a few other bits and bobs plus by the time jeffs fixed other things that no doubt will turn up i rekon itll cost about 3k so it would be cheaper than a gtr

any thoughts or advise would be great and i know its a bit foolish posting this on a zed forum but im pretty sire u guys can be fairly unbiased!!! lol

cheers nick

No not as such its better than a stock R33. it is a ltd edition and is fully kitted, so will obvioulsy look better,

Like i said with the zed just a few little tweeks

As for it being worth 20K i would never spend that on it reguardless of how quick it is

I would much rather a classy car like an Esprit,DB7 etc but each to there own.

I see the skyline range as japans ford escort. and im not keen on the cosworth either

The aim of this car was never to compete against cars you mentioned it is what it is!!! you will only know what am talking about if you owned a 650bhp skyline pretty much eat anything on the road!! that was my purpose when I bought this and started to work on it!! my mates own a garllado, a DB9, and one them own the new maserati ....... and the look the give me is priceless when I shoot past em at 150 mph making em feel as if they standing still!!! nuff said!!!!!

While on a private road I hope,

Hi People, list of parts you need for the conversion

1. Engine with Turbos

2. GTR Bell Housing

3. Complete Gtr Loom

4. Custom Mounts (which I can make)

5. GTR 2WD Sump

6. Honda Civic Radiator

7. Honda Civic Power Steering Reservoir

8. GTR Fuel Filter

9. GTR Intercooler

10. Custom Intercooler Piping

12. GTR ECU

13. Custom Front Cradel (which I can make)

14. GTR Rear Diff

Thats just about it!!!

If you can provide all the above I'll Charge £2500 for the whole conversion and you can drive the car away.

We have a car currently built up and running on standard boost which is absoultely amazing I was gonna bring it up at the Zedworld Bash last year but couldnt get it ready in time!! it will be there this summer defo

There is also another forum dedicated to this conversion where I intially learnt everything from feel free to join up... trust me its worth it !!!!!!!!

http://www.rbz32.com

You ever thought about doing a 4WD version?

yes looked in to that a couple of years ago and was easier then the 2wd conversion, same principals!! however, who ever has done it i think all in all 4 different cars were built in different parts of the world had the same issue, which was when you hit a corner hard at high speed the zed would dipp to a side making the car very uneven and out of balance which was proven to be pretty dangerous. I spoke to the guy who did it in Austrailia, he was happy with the car on the straight but on bends it was a little wavy and on that bombshell I abandoned that project!!

Good News tho some guy in Dubai just finished a Zed project with a skyline R35 engine the whole project thread is on the dubai forum i'll put up on here if I can!!!

when you say just a few little tweeks what do you mean?? I've owned over 35 Zeds in the past twelve years am I missing something here!!!

Your entitled to your opinion here but how can you not be keen on the cosworth?? I've owned 2 of them both phenominal power and can assure you a 400bhp cosworth will kill a 500bhp Zed!!!! also known to be one of the best 2.0litre engines in the world which can cope with a 1000hp, but I guess if your not keen on something then you wont buy it and in which case you wouldnt know what am on about!!

so your looking at around 5k in total why not just spend that on a built vg lump, whats the advantages to using the rb26 lump instead surley spending 5k to mod the vg would give more power than a stock rb26 i know there very tunable but surely your not looking at over 450hp or am i way off?

not on about power. was on about looks and cars being dated. and yes i hate the cosworth. i would take an na zed over a 400hp escort anyday. Its not always about power.

A DB9 or a r33 Hmmm i know which most would want to own reguardless of the speed.

As for a 400hp cosworth vs a 500hp zed off the line maybe. rolling start is has no chance. then take into account power loss to all 4 wheels etc

The escort cosworth weighs about half a ton less than the Z. I think a full weight Z would get destroyed. Can't believe you don't like them, from what i've seen you write I thought that would be right up your street! One of my most favourite cars ever, holding there value very well now as well.

I have never liked them either TBH - overated & owned by chavy bullsh!tters mainly!! The amount of 500+bhp cossies out there that would struggle to make much more than standard is unbelievable!!

each to their own but not for me.

plus its still an Escort (or worse a Sierra LOL)

i rekon rolling start 500hp zed would prob take it, it may weigh half a ton more but as car mad says you get more tranny loss plus the zed would come on boost a lot earlyer seeing as its got half again the cubic capacity of the cossie, i know the cossie lump is shit hot but you cant beat larger capacity engines for power in a strait line

I thought the RB26 was good for 500 bhp on stock internals. Just filter, exhaust, increase of boost and a remap is needed but I stand to be corrected.

I thought the tubs needed replacing at least - arnt they ceramic & break up past 1 bar?!

Not heard of that but never looked into Skylines that much. What's the answer ifty?

Back to the original question and would it be possible for you to keep both for a bit to how you like the new toy and then decide or do you need the funds to buy the GTR?

Im not a fan of many cars tbh lol!!! I like cars that are special and look differant. the likes of supra's gto's esprits etc

Dont get me wrong i know they are all good cars but the likes of cosworths. vxr's Type R's there all just sooped up road cars. they look good but not for me

for example i would take an esprit over a cosworth or a GTR even if they had 1000bhp plus the esprit would get all the looks lol! I think a well kitted zed can look better than an esprit,

so back to the original post. keep the zed lol

Edited by Car.Mad

i like the cossie dont get me wrong i prefer the sierra cossies to the escort but it has to be the proper rs 3 door jobbie not a saph. there are however two very big oproblems with the escort cosworth. firstly it will always look like a mk4 escort and the uneducated will always asume thats what it is and its been chavafied, there is no getting away from that. Secondly the yb yeah its great yeh you can make monster power from it but it is only a 205 block pinto with a 16v head and a different crank. most you can pull out of a pinto without that turbo and 16v is about 210bhp i ran one running 130rwhp which i built myself. it ran good sounded awesome but low end power was sacruificed for top end bhp. once you go mad and try to put 1000 hp through a cossie yb you end up with a fat ass turbo this plus small capacity equals lag.

the age old saying there is no replacement for displacement is false we all know that thats why we brought turbo cars. however ther was some truth in it and styraight line from a standing start, there isnt any replacement. but bolting forced induction ggoodies into the equation build majorly quick and more importntly strong engines. if 2.0 tubs were the best engines ever for building power regaurless of relaibilty or anything else dragsters would all be running pocket engines. but they dont do they. thats where the rb and the vg are great smallish capacity with forced induction gives the best of both worlds giving you torque and bhpo to complete a nice smooth powercurve that provides bottom end grunt till boost. just my two pence worth.

Standard GTR internal is good for around 550bhp, the standard turbo will be good for around 380 - 420bhp or so.

Once you get over that, things get expensive as you need upgraded turbo, fuel system, head gasket or internal, ECU, oil coolers, etc.

Once you get pass around 600bhp it get more expensive as you are starting to see limits of the gearbox.

You CAN push it, but it will break... granted anything breaks but chances are lower with uprated internal.

As far as things goes... there are a lot of advancement in the GTR world.

RB30 can be easily bought from Australia, newer turbo have much better response such as the Garrett GTX, Borg Warner, Precision, etc...

What I find is that once you get massive power, you really appreciate the 4WD system.

I had an issue with 4WD earlier, and the 4WD system wouldn't work.

When my mechanic took it out for a test, he said he hated it. Just feel very unsafe and will spin the wheels at almost any gear at any speed.

Mind you he is a Professional Drift Driver and he still say that!

Once we sort the 4WD system out, he really really like how the car drive.

Very safe, very stable, and the power feels much more progressive... Car goes forward instead of spinning its wheels.

So that is where the issue is for me on the Z32... It is a great GT cars... but once you get into big power you really need 4WD.

I think anything over 500bhp with 2WD is going to be a hand full... and chances are it will not be fun to drive.

SORN the Z, swap insurance to the GTR for a month until you decide, can easily be changed back
