Are Manual & Auto ECU same other than ROM?

If I swap the ROM will a manual ECU work in my auto? I'm pretty sure they are the same. Has anyone tried this?

    No, the ECU's are different.

    the ECU for the automatic has an extra circuit for communicating with the A/T-ECU.

     

    However you can use the ECU from an A/T in a manual car, but not the other way around..

    As Lymon said but one thing to add is Jap auto ecu will NOT work in a UK auto, I know because I`ve tried it, gearchanges are all over the place.
