Hi All,

My brakes are very spongy atm, having had it up on ramps i cant see any issues with discs or pads, also car has braided hoses.

Im planning on bleeding the brakes on sat. but cant find a how to anywhere depsite searching.

There are also conflicting views on which order to do it in.

If you can help can you please advise the following;

1, How much brake fluid does the reseviour hold.?

2, Does it need a specific brake fluid or will any do?

3, In what order is it best to bleed them?

4, Perhaps a link to a how to for replacing the master cylinder???? (Just incase)

Thanks

James

Here you go it's a little different from yank tanks to ours but same principle, I've never used a heat gun before but never had too, dot 4 I believe?,you will need a tube with ID( internal dimension) to fit tightly over caliper nipples, typically its a two man job but, you can get easy bleed kits only requiring 1 person.

Not sure but not much, I would get 3litres of DOT4 as you will waste quite a bit getting all the air out. (well I did lol)

2, Does it need a specific brake fluid or will any do?

DOT 3 or 4 are fine DOT4 is a the better option

3, In what order is it best to bleed them?

I start on the O/S rear, then near side rear, O/S front, N/S front then ABS unit in the boot. This is how I do it but others may have different orders.

Hopefully you won't need to replace but it's just a case of undoing the two brake lines with a 10mm brake spanner. Then undo the to bolts holding the unit onto the brake booster. Give it a bit of a wiggle and it will come off.

Thanks

Hope that helps mate.

Good luck with it mate. I knew nothing about working on cars before I got my zed. Since then I've practically rebuilt the whole car. It's all been self taught from asking questions on here and reading the Service manual. Now there isn't a job on the zed that I wouldn't do myself.

Never be scared to ask questions on here mate.

Absolutely mate you have to learn somewhere I'm a newbie too, just make sure your confident in what you have to do, we can see you have the bug for it, lol

I liked reading that mate, im in exactly the same position now. I do sometimes wonder why I picked one of the most complicated twin turbo charged engines for my first project instead of a nice simple RS Turbo with a simple, single turbo, 4 pot CVH as i originally planned lol

Right would just like to point out on the "thread search" crap.

Zedzilla, we are a enthusiasts forum, if someone has a question, let them ask it, yes we have a search function available, not all the time it gives the answers to the questions people are asking, sometime they just need a bit more reassurance before they commit.

As for someone wanting to do the brakes on their own car, let them thats not for you to decide, you do not know him any more than he knows you, saying "if your asking those questions then you shouldn't be doing it", would you of said the same to me when i asked about dropping the engine on my zed? just because i asked, doesnt mean i do not know what im doing. its called "confirming"

We do not hold a policy of "don't ask unless you have searched" like some forums, also the moderating team are quite capable of saying someone should of used the search function if we feel the need to.

So please, if your in any doubt about how to post on the forum, please feel free to get acquainted with our AUP, link is provided in my Sig, another out burst like that directed to new members will result in an infraction being given.

Right chaps.

having successfully bled the brakes and not set anything on fire or rounded any bolts :-) its not a massively complicated job after all. i dont think they had been bled in some time...... :-( fluid looked like engine oil. The operation of the brakes themselves is so much better i cant tell you....

my dad told me that my recent issues were probably caused by me boiling the brake fluid due to excessively heavy braking..... Hes my dad he would say that lol :-).

one thing i did notice is that whilst bleeding the brakes every time my dad depressed the pedal i could here a sucking/squirting sound. the reseviour was full each time. i cant see any obvious signs of a leak but it has me worried none the less. is this a normal sound assosiated with bleeding the brakes on the z? or is it time to get jeff on it?

cheers

ps remind me to not pick the coldest day of the year to do that next time lol
