Can anyone recommend a good website that explains smartphones to me?

I still have a very old school W995 Sony Ericsson, which is almost out of contract. I haven't a clue re smartphones or iPhones. I know I want to be able to check and send emails, surf, and browse fully on my phone - I haven't a clue what all the other gubbins are about. My current phone has almost 8gb of pics and music on it - will these transfer to a new phone? I am on O2 if that helps?

get an iphone, use your cable you already have to connect your current phone to the PC, grab your pictures off it, and you can transfer them to the iphone when you get it, iphone will do everything you want in your question and more, plus will be free for me to message you using imessage lol

But I'd need one with a similar size memory presumably? DO iPhones play MP3s? as thats the format my music is in, and I have lots of it as I use my phone as my walkman, what with it being a walkman phone!

No ulterior motive there then lol!

I have a lot of friends with iPhones, I should def consider one - just not sure what all this apps nonsense is about, I mean, what the hell is an app?!

itunes converts them to the iphone format, that makes putting music on your phone a lot better due to the compression while keeping the sound quality so more room for tunes, iphones come in 8 (3g) to 64 gig flavours (iphone 4/4s) so plenty of room. all you do is add the music folder to itunes, select the tracks you want on the iphone, itunes does the rest and its very fast.

app = application, you can get them via 2 ways, the old apple way of using the app store direct from the iphone, or from the app store via itunes. simples. once bought or downloaded its linked to your itunes account, which means if you ever delete it, you can re download it free.

the other thing is, you can take regular backups of the iphone, it will back up everything including, text messages, photos, music, settings the works, if you ever need to restore your phone to factory settings for what ever reason, you can restore from back up and have EVERY thing back from when you last backed it up.

Also if you ever damage your phone and want to send it in with out personal information on it, just back up, restore to factory settings, once it comes back, restore from back up, same if its lost or stolen, when your new one (from the insurance you took out lol) you can restore that to exactly the same as your old device before it went.

I've heard of iTunes, no idea what it is or how it works tho - will have to look into it. What does an app do tho, thats what I don't get, is it a game?

I gathered app was short of application, just why does everyone go on about "cool new apps"? :confused1:

My mate asked his phone will he need a coat. It said no not today and it was pissing out side  Why would you need that on a phone. Just look out of the window

well best way to get used to itunes, is to download it and have a look.

as for applications, if you need a map application that tells you were the nearest garage is to fill the bloody zed up again, then there is a app for that, if you want an app that lets you listen to US police departments there is an app for that, they are basically applications to add to the functionality of your idevice. they can range from games to education to useful to completely useless but, there is an app for that lol

Most smartphones are useless as MP3 players because the battery will die much quicker then rendering it useless as a phone

Good, it can do the ironing then!

no your thinking of the I-ron, it's a device im sure as being a woman you are already aqauinted with lol:taz:

If I were you Jane, I'd get the same phone Mikeys got, it's smaller than an iPhone, but with a full touch screen, decent camera with flash, battery life is reasonable and has an operating system that allows you to use flash (The software that lets you view online video etc.), doesn't empty your bank account a little bit more every time you want an app (Like the iPhone does) and it'll definitely be free for upgrade, regardless of what tarrif you're on I reckon, unlike the iPhone, which if you're not on a relatively heavy tarrif, will cost you on upgrade. Mikey has the Samsung Galaxy Ace, turned out to be a cool little phone for him and covers all your bases, since he moved out of here and hasn't had a computer, he's been using it to come on here and stuff.

Dont let Apple get that idea. They will stick an ipod nano in it.

Call it the I-Ron "listen while you work":lol:

jane, have a look at phones running android, the sony ericsson xperia arc is very good and user friendly, also no ties to apple like you have with the iphone :-)

Are you not using the Blackberry? does all of that...

Why would you want to have a crapberry?! The network goes down all the time lol

iPhone iPhone iPhone!!!

He also asked it the meaning of life. It said it didnt know. He asked again and it said 42 :lol:

PMSL!! hitchhikers guide to the galaxy reference!! :smartass:

42 is the answer to life, the universe & everything!

i was like you jane, and when i first bought my sony erricson xperia x10 i didnt like it at all, people say "it's a phone, make calls on it" but once i got uswed to it i loved it, so much so that when my contract is up for renewal im gonna keep the x10 and just decrease the price

shell has the htc sensation and she has had a few prob's, but in all not a bad phone, she like's it

one thing you will need is an in car charger, the battery will last half a day on most smart phone's under constant use

they are great once you get used to them

stellaz, m8, go for the xperia arc!!!!!!!!!!!! its the phone the x10 should have been, with camera flash, pinch to zoom etc etc. i had the x10 and loved it but when i had to return it due to a charging fault (my fault i think using a dodgy charger) they didnt have any x10s in stock so they had to upgrade me to the 'arc' :-) great phone!!!
