well, I've lost a good friend to someone who was using there phone while driving, but just had a reminder sent in a email about the dangers of it, as it was a PPS file, I've taken the images out of the PPS file so i can put the post up. anyway, i think the pictures say more than i ever could. (not sure if some of you have had this emailed to you already but for those that haven't)

Youch, that's a serious accident. A couple of friends of mine have recently been in bike accidents, thankfully both ok, but this is why I'm not allowed a bike and why I don't talk on my phone in the car.

I can truly say that I never use my mobile when driving I have seen to many fatalities when i used to work on the recovery truck

Another thing the bike shouldn't have been doing 85 mph !

not sure that 15mph would of made much difference, possibly the driver might have survived, but doubt the passenger or the biker would have.

No my point is this, bikes always seem to get off any blame, like that advert when turning right think bike, well the arse shouldn't be trying to filter overtaking a car while it's trying to turn right, IMO the bike was in the wrong, as was this biker And the person pulling out while using a mobile.

Have to agree with HellRaiser on this one and that 15mph could have made all the difference tbh, reaction times are in milliseconds for most bikers, 15mph is a lot of milliseconds. One of my biker friends that has recently had an accident and he bikes into London to the office usually, even he says he's an idiot for filtering and blasting down the dual carriageways on his way in.

This accident happened near Stockholm in Sweden back in 2003. The Swedish police do actually take this to various bike shows to warn bikers about excessive speed. The police estimated that the bike was travelling at around 155mph before it hit the side of the Golf. It's believed that the rider had only recently obtained his licence

Whilst it's true it's dangerous to use a phone whilst driving, I think anybody looking at the pictures would agree that 85mph is a massive under-statement of speed!

Having been a biker for quite a few years on some quite fun machinery I always took the view that I'm invisible to pretty much everything on the road. If you ever put yourself in a position where there is no escape route then it may be the last time you do. I'm not saying that there isn't a bit of luck here and there, but experience is important. And having ridden a bike it teaches you an enormous amount about road surfaces that car drivers wouldn't normally consider. However, in this instance, I'm sure both were at fault, but just because the driver was on the phone didn't automatically mean that with a quick glance up the road he would have seen the bike bearing down on him at ??? mph ! As has been said before, speed doesn't cause accidents, but it makes a much bigger mess when they occur.

Even not on the phone you have no chance pulling out a junction on an a road with sum 1 doing 115mph. Both at falut but it dors have to said you often left right etc go to pull out and from nowhere some dick comes round the corner doing twice the limit and gives you the look for not being able to see round bends

I don't think the driver of the Golf was actually on the phone. The occupants of the Golf were an elderly couple and stories about mobile phone use have only recently been attached to these pictures. If police estimates of the bike speed are anywhere near accurate the driver of the Golf would have had no chance of seeing the bike

to be perfectly honest, even if its untrue, if it stops one person having a crash due to misuse of a mobile phone while at the wheel, then i feel it was worth twisting the truth.

Though i didnt know that when i put the post up, does still highlight the dangers.

I do think sometimes some bike riders are quick to blame car users for not looking out for bikes etc,but some of these bikes are ridden so fast and can accelerate so quick that they can appear from nowhere.

I absolutely agree :)

My company car is a white Vauxhall Insignia.....the look on some people's faces in the rear view mirror when they get a flash of the headlights because they're on the phone is often priceless.....it's one of my pet hates too along with lots of others

i cant stand it, i can not understand how any one can justify it, especially sending text messages? surely it can wait. or just find a place to pull over, i always hand my phone to my passenger or pull over to answer and let them know im driving, if not ill let it ring and get back to them when i eventually find a place to pull over. my life is more important than a bloody moblie text message or a voice call that can wait.

Not only that with hands free kits so cheap, no need to even use a hand held

I keep passing a woman in a Golf who's frequently using her mobile phone and doing her hair/makeup in the rear view mirror, this is when I'm taking my son to school in the morning. All it would take is for her to lose direction a little and that's it, head on collision.

I apologise up front if this (or my last) comment upsets anyone, not looking to cause trouble here. But before anyone else jumps on the filtering bandwagon (and I have no idea what advert is being mentioned here by the way), filtering on a bike is NOT illegal. forgetting all the issues of danger, it is still allowed but depends heavily on what speeds are involved as to whether it can be done. The designs of many cars these days make spotting bikes ever harder with thicker pillars and wider areas of steel in an attempt by car manufacturers to make the roor and car itself more solid in case of crashes. Most bikers are on full alert when filtering, but no matter how careful a rider is, there is no defence from a car driver who does a quick glance in their rearview mirror then changes lane. Taking filtering out of the equation altogether, I have had to swerve out of the way on numerous occasions from cars on dual lane roads suddenly deciding to move and not seeing (or hearing) that the bike was there. I am not defending the biker for his speed, it would be like saying that you guys with your 300 bhp fire breathing monsters never ever went over a speed limit, but from a percentage of blame side of things, it is pretty clear that this womans stupidity caused the issue of giving the bike nowhere to go. You hear so many times how a biker has been killed by someone pulling out of a side street onto a main road (I have lost 2 friends to this very thing over the years), at least in this case (and I am sorry if this sounds callous) the person that pulled out paid the price as well.

I know it sends a message, and rightly so, but has anyone else noticed that the seat unit and the back end of the bike look completely undamaged?....Honda seat units/panels usually crack just from loooking at them, let alone slamming one into a Volkswagon at 85mph and flipping it 20ft!, eben the rear subframe looks pretty straight.i dropped a mates VFR750 off the sidestand and made a worse mess of the backend!

As I said, it sends out a message, but looks a bit staged imho.......

Edit.....just noticed in the one pic that the carbonfibre end can on the exhaust is still attached to the exhaust hanger....surely this would have been ripped straight off?, as most exhaust hangers bolt to the rear footpeg hangers which are usually made of monkey metal and just snap with an impact.

I thought that too. Obviously the bike had to be removed from inside the car in order for the bodies to be retreived. I'd imagine the interior of the car had a bit of a clean up too.

I'd guess that the bike was pretty much unidentifiable (as a bike) after a collision so a few replacement panels were added so that it could be used as such an attention grabber

initially it works. then it gets people talking which in the eyes of the road safety goons no doubt means it works too. but then it starts off the whole 'it was because it was a speeding biker' 'it was a woman driver' 'it was someone on a phone' 'it was a miserable day and a butterfly was just squashed in venezuela' type shyte.

Staged, most definitely. but things like this happen all too often. Train drivers get stones, bricks, lumps of masonry and even steel bars thrown at them all year round, when a car or truck gets hit by something on the motorway it is big news as it is something regular people can relate to. This imagery does exactly the same and hammers a point home that it could happen to you. thats about it really, after that its all downhill as far as this particular codswallop goes.

Personally, I prefer the way the Aussies do things. all codswallop but done in a way that really sticks in your head

As much as they are pretty gruesome, the NZ drink drive ads are one way to hammer the point RIGHT home

I know filtering is not illegal it's just the way that most go about it! I am getting fed up with push bikes filtering down the inside jumping on and off curbs as they please then complain when they get knocked off at a junction! And at the same time motorcyclists filtering down the middle of the road, I'm spending more time worrying wtf is going on behind me instead of concentrating on the road infront.

dont even want to go near push bikes side of things, jumping red lights, clipping your car as they squeeze past, stopping a line of cars as they bumble down the middle of the road. aaaargghhhh
