stupid thing nearly sent me flying into a curb!!!! gave it some welly off the lights yday and as per usual the rear broke traction, no problem she usualy does just this time the camber of the road made the back step out, again no problem i thought so i went to correct it and the stupid thing kicked the back end over to the curb!!! is that normal or is it broken? if its normal were can i get a lock out bar because its gotta go!!! lol

Get the Driftworks lockout kit, IMHO it's the only sure fire way to lockout the HICAS as it replaced the steering rack, the track rods, the ends and the bushes in the hubs with poly items. HICAS can be weird, it can be very useful for aiding steering in corners on dry roads and such, but my own experience with HICAS on my GTR was not fun, it too slammed me into a kerb after the car lost traction on a patch of diesel, it can make the car very hard to bring back from a slide.

i would be looking at your rear tyres matey, hicas kicks in at certain speeds to help cornering and lane changes, it shouldn't be working when pulling out of a junction, you may find in weather like we have had recently the road conditions are not helping, you are in a rear wheel drive car

HICAS kicks in all the time, especially if it's malfunctioning. The main reason the earlier HICAS was replaced and upgraded on later cars at the factory was because early HICAS was shit and unreliable. Don't forget, the car only knows what speed it's going by it's sensors, which are usually hooked into the gearbox and wheels, if the wheels are spinning and the gearbox is going fast enough, the car can think it's going faster than it is. Also, I dunno if it affects the HICAS on the Z, but on the GTR, loud noises were known to affect HICAS. Numerous reports from Skyline owners of all flavours, GTR and GTS-T came back that having a sub in the boot of a skyline would/could make the HICAS go ape shit! I experienced this myself in the GTR too. The Grey Z has never had HICAS since we got it and the yellow one had it, but the subs were never properly installed before it was scrapped.

LOL!! the front wheels wont spin though & thats how ABS/traction/4WS systems work - it will compare the driven wheels to the non driven wheels or non locked wheels etc to get a reading for each system to work.

I can think for the life of me that Nissan would have the system just take the reading from the fastest wheel!!

and it only gives like a couple of degrees or so on our cars from memory

I doubt this was HICAS but simply your tyres loosing traction

or wear in the rear suspension/bad rear tracking

you could also get a Racelogic TC system installed!!

Well I love mine so there:tt2:

I doubt this was just wheels losing traction, else as has been discussed many times on here, the car would have been predictable and easily controlled by letting off. I have no HICAS on mine and it's predictable as you like, even on dodgy camber, if the back end steps out, either power through if there's room, or if not, let off and the back end snaps back, this didn't happen here from what he says, hence me inclined to think it's HICAS too.

You would have a point about the back wheels not being part of the speed reading, if I hadn't seen it before on other cars (Ford Capri for one very old example, spin the rear wheels, the speedo moved :D) I have no idea where it reads it from on the Z.

I loved mine on the GTR on the track, just not on the road. I've driven Mikeys car with HICAS and did give it some, it just didn't feel right when the HICAS kicked in. Felt weird going round the last corner at Silverstone in the GTR with it going sideways, but without the skidding sounds :confused1: lol

im sorry bud id say crappy tyres to be honest rather than malfuctioning hicas, or even ice/wet road surface given its very bloody cold out there.

i lost my back end just like he did last year, and it wasnt hicas that was the problem, road surface and tyres played a big part.

It seems with hicas people tend to forget the things that give them grip, hicas doesnt move enough, and at the lower speeds it would of crabbed more than given opposite turn. also when spinning the rear wheels, the speedo doesnt climb fast, the rev counter does

Would help if we knew what tyres he had on and how much tread.

PS i love my hicas too.

Hicas only kicks in at 58mph and only turns by about 1.5 of a degree. personally i prefer the zed without.

its got brand new (1000ish mile old) toyo proxeys on the rear to be fair it is wet out there, although i did let off which is when in snapped back towards the kerb so i guess if when i let off and it went to step back in line it could have hit a patch of derv or something that may have sent it toward the kerb

I doubt many will be interested but I take it all back about the hicas, turns out this was probably caused by badly worn hicas ball joints jeffs changed them now so happy days!! Just Can't wait to pick the car up next weekend should feel like a completely different car!!!

I think that my car is much better with the hicas removed. I found that with it still on, when I lost traction the back became very unpredictable, very wobbly.

Now that it has been removed it is just as predictable as any other rwd car, and my ball joints were solid, I use the same ones with the lock out bar fitted.

I actually think the lock out bar is the best thing you can do to a zed, I think the hicas kills confidence and makes the car feel unstable

the back end of mine used to wag like a happy dog . after a few brown trouser moments i changed the rear inner arms and now shes a completely different animal .

I'm another who thinks the HICAS is fine on the car......

.....but make sure that your ball joints are sound; and above all MAKE SURE THE WHEEL ALLIGNMENT IS SPOT ON!!! Many people do not realize just how crucial it is that the steering wheel is bang on the straight with a 300zx. When you get the allignment done on any car, sometimes the technician does not always get the steering wheel dead straight. This is vital with a 300zxTT since the steering wheel houses sensors for the HICAS; so if it isn't straight, the HICAS can operate at the wrong time mid corner....

.....you'll be surprised how differently the car can behave after a proper 4-wheel allignment setup has been done!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Well I'll make my mind up when I get the car back from jeff as it's never been right in my ownership so I've got no bench mark really lol
