Sorry but, lol. Yes you've probably mullered the HG, not to mention warped the heads, potentially cracked the block, there are all sorts of things that could go wrong if you run out of water in a TT V6, none of them are good. Also, this isn't likely to stop at the HG I'm afraid, you'll probably find something serious is bent, cracked or warped, so I'd look for a new engine I think :( Obviously get a proper report from a mechanic, but brace yourself and sit down while he tells you I reckon.

Why would you go for a blast on the M6 with a leaky radiator?....if its cooked its fooked..

Yeap you've done ya heads in sadly, check all your water pipes when you have it apart, heater hoses and especially the pipes under the plenum that run to the throttle bodies, also check turbo water lines etc. as you most likely lost water that way causing the heads to blow.

Sucks i know but you can build it better, stronger... faster!

^^^^^ there's always a silver lining in every cloud.....or is that big hole in bank balance?

TT zed engines are pretty cheap these days though, good luck mate

Yeah he should be able to source a long block cheap enough?

Rather than buy one with all the turbo's headers etc attached, probably work out cheaper than gaskets, head planing, etc etc.

yeah i know im an idiot dont think any thing has bent though turns over easy just wont start ill get it sorted this is an engine out job? gives me a chance to give the bay a good clean lol

You'll have to yank the motor to get the turbos and headers off...

Just put another motor in it mate. It will seriously be cheaper...

And of course paint up the new motor all pretty while ya in there. then again i have nothing better to do. :whistling:

probally beyond a rebuild if its that bad. compression test will reveil all, but as said the heads will be warped at least, due to the cast iron bottom end and aluminium heads cooling at different rates. pull it out and pop in a new one.

well i have nothing to do on my days off either been and had a look head gasket set

£170 both heads skimmed about £60 ect if its just the gasket engines from about £200-£700

think ill just get another engine and use the other for spares

its only money after all what else would i spend it on oh food

does it have to be a turbo engine or will a none turbo do if i transfer my bits over

What he said, not the end of the world mate, don't know if you have already done much, but there's tons you can clean/delete etc. while the engine is out, spending money is always a royal sting in the arse these days, but a nice fettled shiny engine and bay will be worth it. Have to agree tho, pretty much a doughnut thing to do, but hey ho, do a compression test and take it from there, you can get a replacement donkey cheap as chips, still amazes me how cheap a used VG30DETT is, considering what a fantastic engine it is, best of luck matey...

Non turbo is different compression ratio, exhaust valves, plus allsorts of other differences, missing oil feeds etc, although I have always been curious, and waiting for someone to do a bolt on NA block turbo, with the higher compression etc, could be interesting, but not a job to do if you just want the car back on the road, TT lumps are more common that NA's anyways, I would say....

You did refill the coolant before trying to restart it yeah? you may be lucky in my search for my overheating problem, a few lads in aus300zx have had worse happen and everything has been OK, i suppose it really boils down to when you noticed.

id refill the system check everything on the out side, make sure there's fuel in it and give it another go.

Have you done a compression test?

going to do a compression test and a few other things tommorow

my sisters offered to buy me an engine so just need to look for one theres a couple of interesting ones on fleabay

with how ebay is mate, id see if anyone has a known working good one from a breaker on here first, if the one on ebay is already out of the car, you only have there word on it.

You want to be able to test it first and see its all running before parting cash.

get your self a block tester as well, only 41quid from UKtools, that will tell you if you have blown it as well.

Do you have the tell tail sign of coolant mixed with oil? (like a tan type mayo) on your dip stick / oil filler cap / radiator?

Doesn't happen all the time, especially if the HG has blown between cylinders.

when did you notice the temperature?

the coolant gauge went up to hot then went back down to normal then lost power pulled over sat on the m6 for about half hour pored in about 6litres of water it was boiling out of the radiator and that was after half an hour so id guess there was no water atall and the only thing cooling the engine was the oil id say its dead

temp going up would be it over heating, temp going down would be when the water emptied,

6 litres of water is just over what the rad holds, its a 10 ltre system or there abouts. so you had water in it, but it wasn't circulating. still might not be dead yet.

just out of curiosity, why didn't you pull over when the temp started raising?

bin the engine mate, headgasket replacement on a cooked 20 year old engine is a recipie for disaster. It prolly has done untold damage, dont forget when it overheats the oil thins which can result in piston, ring and crank bearing failure and possible turbo problems.Get a good known engine its the best way.

Yeah i'll have to agree for the cost of a new engine its just not worth bothering.

Sounds like he has a sister who takes good care of him in crisis!
