I reckon that the starter motor is on its way out on the shortie. Over the last few days, everytime I turn the key in the ignition to start her up it sounds similar to if you try turning the ignition on a car when it's already running....

on the second attempt it fires up ok, but only a matter of time before it fails completely.

I've got a spare starter motor on my '91 LWB TT; I assume that it will fit a newer '95 SWB TT?

The clutch needs replacing as a priority (the new one comes with flywheel already attached), would it make sense to do both at the same time, as I haven't got a clue where the starter motor is on a zed?

Is it an easy job, changing the starter motor on a zed?

cheers

one of two things there bud, either your flywheel has a bit that has worn teeth on it (like mine ill get a photo tomorrow) or the starter motor needs a good clean as its not engaging the drive gear.

Easy way to check, next time it does it, with the engine off, and foot off the clutch, put it in gear so it moves the fly wheel around, then attempt it, if it still does the noise it could be the starter.

they are easy to change anyway, unplug from the loom, undo the bolt at the back with the + from the battery on it and move the big thick wire out of the way. undo the the two bolts holding it to the gearbox and remove. its a little heavy so dont knock your self out lol

oh and its a peice of pee on a zed, you can get to the starter with out moving anything, its bolted to the gearbox bell housing on the drivers side.

Cheers mate I'll give that a go tomorrow

Only bad thing is, I reckon I might have stripped it off the LWB already without even knowing what it was.....doh:blushing:

Can't remember if I binned it, so I might be after a replacement if it turns out that the starter motor is fubar'

if ya need a hand i know a VM with zed experience passing through your way next week ;)

Now aint that handy haha.

bud ive got a spare starter motor and a gearbox already off the car, it really isn't that hard a job, ill get photos of where the starter motor goes and what it looks like if you really need it, but trust me, when your under the car, its on the drivers side of the gearbox, mounted by 2 bolts, with the thick positive cable from the battery connected at the rear by a 12mm bolt, and a wire coming off it that connects to a bit of the gearbox loom, you really cant go wrong.

Yeah I think I know what you mean bud, and I'm 99% certain I've stripped it off

it took all of 10 minutes to whip it off, so if the reverse is about the same then all is good, just got to see if I've still got it

cheers matey

I've heard that a proper VM can change a complete brake setup, clutch and flywheel and starter motor in about 40 minutes with only two brews in between.......personally I reckon that's b*****ks (probably more like 3 brews!) but always willing to be proven wrong! :whistling:

Most likely going to be that the starter motor bolts to the gearbox have come loose. very common, They work loose, then the movement eventually strips the thread in the box or snaps the mounting.

Could also just be the same problem I had, where the solenoid died in the starter. This is the most common thing on most other cars, but apparently relatively uncommon on the Z compared to the loose bolts or missing teeth on the flywheel scenarios. If all else fails, I have 2 spare starters in the garage I think ;)

If you think it is the solenoid give the starter motor a whack with a hammer and it should loosen it. I've done this and it works to get it started but ideally needs the solenoid replacing to be fully reliable again.

Yeah mine did it from a few days after I got it (Guessing previous owner had used a hammer, lol) for about 4 or 5 months, gradually getting worse and worse, until it stopped. Thankfully it was already at my mechanics getting the rocker cover gaskets fixed, so it was in the right place. He rang me up and was like "Yeah the rocker covers are fixed, so I guess you can take it now, except the starter has finally given up, so you can't". We went down there and tried all sorts to get it started, all it did was feck the plugs and drain the battery :(

Mine has the exact same symptons. Just started to do it over the past 2 days. I have no idea what it is. For me it seems to happen when the weather gets cold.

Last year. summer spot on. winter came it did it. Summer this year was spot on and the last 2 days its done it again :wack:

Solenoid sticking me reckons. Anyone know if these can be replaced and if so are they easy to do or is it easier to just get a new starter motor?

had that happen to mine few weeks back so worth checking to see if the bolts are tight, touch wood was lucky to fit slightly longer bolts grabbed a few threads that had not been stripped with plenty of extra strong thread lock to hold it on.

Could be, the metal contracting and expanding etc with the differant temps.

Good jod i dont drive it in minter

Yeah same thing used to happen to my bosses Pajero when I worked on a ski resort in NZ. Thing with the Pajero was its dead easy to swing a hammer underneath, yours however looks slightly more involved......:whistling:
