Hiya Jay,

Theres a few things you can do:

Option 1 Fit a HKS ALC(approx £199), its a Auto gear box controller and will make the shifting alot faster.

Option 2 Fit a seperate Autobox Oil cooler as the standard cooler is in the main rad and therefore not very good. Seperate Coolers are about £250 to £350 I think. Its a good investment as it is supposed to help the auto 'box last longer.

Option 3 Go the whole hog and get a "Fast Road Conversion" done on your auto 'box, this involves your 'box being rebuilt with stronger clutch packs and other bits to make the box handle more than approx 450bhp(they say). Normally when a fast road conversion is done they advise an external Oil cooler as in Option 2. Cost is about £1500. As MAC1 what he thinks as his box has been upgraded by SE Nissan.

Hope this helps mate.

Yea you got it Trev wink.gifI had a SE fast road box and external oil cooler fitted last year,I got to say its a MASSIVE improvement on the standard box,as it shifts through the forward gears on full boost,it snaps through them in a split second, and NEVER EVER fails to kick down wink.gif.

Eeeek this sounds a bit harsh.I'm no techy (clearly - I've got a manual ) but this sounds as if there is a lot of grief being thrown at the transmission.

Reading the posts here gives the impression that the standard auto box is clever in throttling back when shifting and doing other clever things not appropriate to boring manual owners like me.

Or am I just wimping out?

I think Bob from Safe & Sound had an ALC fitted to his auto(not sure if he sold it).

I think also Anders and Jan Chase have or had ALC's.

Gio The fast road rebuild specification will improve the change speed on very powerfull cars, through a higher applied pressure to the clutch packs. This prevents scorching of the friction materials during the second phase of the upshift, leading to a more positive change and less wear tongue.gif The fastest hands in the game can not change this fast in a manual biggrin.gif.

I rest my case....

Had the same done to mine (when it died), worked a treat, until I got a manual box and sold it to Steve.R - he seemed pretty happy too. Definitely should go for the uprated cooler though.

Jay,

I've got a HKS ALC on mine so you'll have to take it for a spin and see what you think.

I think it does a lot of what the fast road conversion does and increases the pressure in the box when on full throttle and snaps it through the gears much faster.

Well, it certainly scared the bejasus out of that geezer in Max Power (I don't normally buy this but your Zed made it a special case biggrin.gif )!

So you're saying that the fast road rebuild acts to reduce wear?

Also (showing big ignorance as usual) does this mean Z autos are friction plate based rather than fluid couplings (like the old auto Chrysler my dad had)?

Something new every day, as they say! smile.gif Gio

just ordered my HKS ALC,going in tommorow if johnny can get me 1

cheers guys im after the seperate oil cooler now.jay

Gio

Friction plate based as in wet multi plate clutches. The torque converter is the fluid coupling type device.

I fink anyway. Stand to be corrected
