Hi on the car i just got which a altomatic. I have a swith just in front of the gear lever. It has the word power under that A/T and under that hold power

Hold

what this for can any one help not had a auto before :confused1:

I used hold for driving in wet conditions ect and power for better acceleration changes the revs I'm sure some1 will explain it better lol

Hold is indeed for winter/treacherous conditions, you will set off in 2nd instead of 1st, and it will change gear at lower revs to prevent wheel spin etc. Power, lets the engine pretty much redline(ish) before changing, so you can give it the beans, but as you do the kickdown with the accelerator, you will notice the power light come on, that is the same thing really...

As well as A/T switch as explained above the is an overdrive on/off switch on the gear shift itself. That switches the overdrive on and off

Nissan recommend that it's off for town driving but I've never known anyone do that !

I always have OD off around town, drives like a sloth with OD on. OD only on for cruising.

Power is useful as it keeps the revs up high after you lift off the throttle. Hold sometimes nice for motorway if you don't want any kickdown.

No point leaving it on around town you're just putting more strain on the motor than needed.

Only if you ever get fast enough to change up to o/d going round town.....

Suppose it depends on which town !

Well ...yeah.

Without plucking at straws, we're talking 'city' driving.

The Japanese automatic transmission has many more features than the export models. A "power", "normal" and "hold" switch is fitted to modify transmission shift points. The effect of the "power" setting is to delay upshifting, but does not alter the maximum RPM that change occurs. In order to change at the red line or rev limiter speed, one must operate the shifter manually. The hold setting allows holding prevents downshift into second when the shifter is set to "D", and prevents downshift into first when the shifter is in "2". Another curious feature with the Japanese version is that lock up is also available in second gear.
