On a job at the moment and the customer has asked if we can provide a fully sealed and watertight pond coating. Not something i've used or that I am familiar with but seem to recall there are some guys on here that might be.

The pond is a newly constructed one, 12metres x 6metres and 4 blocks deep (900mm). It will have a rendered finish to the walls.

I was wondering if there is a product on the market suitable for this? I will be applying a 'synthaprufe' type coating before any further coatings if there is such a product.

Thanks in advance for any info/advice.

I would like at lining it as well with some type of insulation if Koi are going in. You can get 1 inch polystyrene which is good, then fit your liner onto that..

Thats a huge surface area for a pond.... jealous as fook....

If I need info I speak to these Guys as local to me but do loads of Internet stuff as well..

The Guy is really knowledgeable and will give you loads of advice.

Why not do what they did with canals 200 years ago and use clay :whistling:

Because when you piss in them they start to smell....:slap:

Cheers fellas. I'll have a look at the above. It is an infill between his house and adjacent pool complex. It'll have a covered bridge/walkway over it. I have the painting & decorating contract and he's asked me to look into possibilities for the 'pond' area. Pretty sure he'll be having Koi in there so may have to look into the insulating thing.

Not sure why he's not keen on the liner option tbh. Pretty sure you can get them in most colours nowadays and as its a perfectly formed shape i'm sure it'd be the same concept as a swimming pool liner?

Thanks for the replies so far. This place is like google with aacyual knowledge:cool2:

give me a buzz tomorrow mate ive got koi ponds and made a few now

Cheers Craig. I think the guy thought it'd be just a case of a waterproof coating. And tbh I thought there'd be a product on the market. Not something i've ever dealt with though.

If you haven't changed it since you sold me the plate i'll have it. Cba to walk upstairs lol.

i cant remeber the exact ins and out sof it but the stuff they sell in aquatics shops as a waterproofer is actually exactly the same as what you buy at the diy store but its half the price or less from the builders merchant. also if you fibreglass theres a set prodcedure else it will take ages to relieve the amonia from the water.... if they are wanting to go for koi try to ecourage them to go towards a section of 1200mm deep water, better growth rates and of corse more volume etc etc. as craig said anything you need gimme a shout.

im a swimming pool engineer and we use the same fitting etc so anything plumbing wise or if you need a big filtration system, sand filetrs etc, i do all the plumbing the pumps the whole shebang, bottom drains etc are ussually imperal which is of corse what i do. unfortunatly where down in dorset.

Might have to have a chat to you fella about bottom drains etc for the new pond being planned for next year ;)

I'm in the process of builing my pond at the moment. It will be a Koi pond so a little bit deeper than 900mm (7' to be exact) however if you are looking for a sealant that is fish friendly, the best one avilable at the moment is G4, however this is a little on the expensive side.

Have you thought about fibregalssing it or getting a box linner for it (unless of course it is not a square / rectangle).

Also remember that if you are not going to go for a specific pond waterproofer or fiber glass you must make sure that the resin and gel coat are not toxic to fish. In both these cases after the pond coat has cured it must be washed down with soapy water before filling the pond.

Are you going with bottom drain gravity fed or pump fed system, I would highly reccommend a bottom drain?. Also for a koi pond of that size you really want it a little deeper. minimum for Koi is about 4'6".

One other thing, for the surface area you have you will probably need two bottom drains and the bottom benched towards them, unless of course you are looking at aerated bottom drains like spindrifter, in which case you don't need to bench the bottom, only make sure you reduce all 90 degree angle to 45 so you don't get a build up of waste for the bad bacteria to breed in.

he has some stunning ponds and used a concrete render with green fibres in and its bloody good stuff very strong and when sealed properly great with fish, hes a koi breader and all his ponds are done with this stuff and he has some stunning fish

To give you an idea of scale it sits between the main house and the pool house.
