Along with a whole raft of other modifications yet to execute on my car, I am also weighing up brake options. I was leaning towards the Akebono kit from Z1 which is 1600 (with my spec of options ticked) before import costs and duty. The advantage of this kit is the availability of off-the-shelf parts (the kit uses Infinity parts available through any Nissan dealer) at reasonable prices. The disadvantage is its only a 2 pot calliper and not a true sports brake kit, so may only be a fast road setup, rather than a track friendly one.

I see now Japspeed are offering reasonable prices for D2 356mm 8pot front brake kits and 330mm 4 pot rear kits - 1700 quid all in. Has anyone got these brakes fitted and, more importantly, has anyone given them some serious hammer on track? I don't intend regularly driving on track, but I want to know they can withstand an hour or so of backroad blast.

The final decision I have to make is whether to get all these chassis mods done first (which would be sensible), including a new set of wheels to fit those brakes in. Or, whether to get the engine finished first to release the full 450bhp I've been chasing (internals and turbos uprated, but still need to upgrade the cooling and fuelling). Decisions, decisions (daddy or chips?)

Your opinions and experiences welcomed.

The D2 setup certainly looks the business and a bargain at that price, especially with braided hoses and pads included.would like a setup like, this on my zed :)

car mad has them PM him, he has front and rears.

chase the big BHP 1st mate, and get some yellow stuff pads. job done.

Thanks for the heads-up, Murmur doesn't have a spec list or rides section that I could, so hopefully he'll see this and comment.

For the record Car.mad has K-sport brakes - so still trying to find someone who can give me an appraisal on these D2's! Although I appreciate many big brake packages will have similarities, its always useful to hear from the horses mouth.

Think Ksport and D2's are nigh on identical, I have the 330mm 8 pot Ksports. Unfortunately not fitted yet so can't help you : (

i've got the k-sport's (and from what i've heard they're also the same basically)on the front and its the 330mm 8 pot ones and all i can say is they make a massive massive change in the breaking, you feel much more secure on the car with them .the thing is if you go down the route for the 450bhp you will have the ' problem' of the brakes mate and if you go for the front and back brakes you will have a superb deal on the price and not to mention the great difference it makes.

and before i made any big changes to the engine i decided to buy the brakes first too, cause i really hated the standard brakes :(

Reason I'm upgrading is that I did a track day the standard brakes faded away in under 5 laps. Think mainly due to the low quality brake fluid. they were alright in terms of performance just not for as long as I needed them to be!

Ok, didn't realise the D2 and K-sport were so similar. What pads did you opt for Pixas? What I've noticed is, the standard brakes will stop you from sub three figure speeds pretty well - but only once. After repeated hard braking they're toast. I was wondering if these conversions suffer a similar kinda fade, but I guess its the pads that make the greatest difference in this respect and whether you can put up with the squeaking of high temp resistant pads?

The more I think about it, the more my sensible head says chassis mods first. I'm not convinced my 235 section rubber will withstand 450bhp either, infact, I know they won't - they can barely contain 350 ish.

Edit: Surprised you managed to get 5 laps from the standard brakes tbh SY, depends on the circuit I guess.

when i bought my k sports they came with the standard k sport pads mate and from the standard nissan brakes i had and the k sport ones i dont have that type of fade at all and if you upgrade it front and back you will have a great stopping power mate , just on the fronts it makes a massive difference.

its an expensive game this to do right isnt it lol, everything you do means something else has to come up with it.

Quavey has D2 if I remember correctly? I'd uprate brakes before chasing any more horses, but that's just me. Along with adjustable arms and polybushes whilst going about it. This will give you loads of time to choose some new wheels to clear your new brakes, then change your mind about a hundred times before settling on the wheels you wanted originally

I do indeed, I have a 330mm set of 8 pots on the front, but standard on the rear. A huge improvement over stock I have to say, even with the standard D2 pads... Thats over both zeds ive had and both rebuilt and unrebuilt standard calipers, and rebuilt standard calipers with relocation brackets, 324mm disks and ds2500 pads.

They are the same as K-Sports, simply a re brand. Which are both a copy of AP brakes - hence why the aftermarket pads are all "for AP brakes".

I havnt had them on track, but what I have noticed is that until the pads ware warm they are not amazing but as soon as a spot of heat in them then they are great.

Thanks for the feedback.

Daffy - have narrowed it down to two wheels now, either Rota GTR Drift or Rota Grid Drift, but still have to decide size and colour :confused1:

Quavey - thanks for the info, I guess if you're going to copy someone's product then it may as well be AP Racing Brakes! The fact that they are a little uncompliant when cold does not worry me unduly - I would rather that than the current situation, obviously. I guess there always has to be a trade off, somewhere.

Could anyone notice a change after fitting big brakes, handling wise?
