Old Aircon Systems - R12

So I'm not happy with the coldness of the aircon (though taking the roof of is a fix I've been using - a lot)which leads to 2 questions to you guys:

1. How cold should it get? I'd expect (from my old Dagenham junkers) it to get seriously cold when I set it to 10. but it doesn't.

2. Whats the true situation with converting from R12 &/or is there anybody out there who can still refresh R12 systems?

It does get nice and cold. But mine isnt working as well as it did last year. So I think mine needs refilling too.

So Im interested in people who can do it too.

should be quite cold! not tested on my zed but temp should go as low as 6-8 c from the vents on the lowest setting.

R12 is now illegal to use, conversion to R134a is possible, just need to really vacuum out system getting as much of the old oil out as poss, the oils dont mix well with the wrong gas, turn to like a crystalized jelly. not good for the compressor & block up the expansion valve. make sure you top up with the correct oil & replace the reciever/drier. iv got a guide at work of what to do for this conversion, ill dig it out to see if anything else is involved.

you can also get a direct replacement gas, cant remember the designation, but we use it at work, will find out if you want.

I got mine done last year. Aircon guy said R416 (I think) was better than R134A. Better blend to simulate R12 original anyway. I checked with a thermometer at the vents with it set to cold. It does get down to about 8 deg C. Cool!

He vacuumed out remaining R12 and put in the R416 and synthetic oil and also some fluorescent dye to show up any leaks.

Cost £85 - £90

if you try hard enough someone will have r12 around somewhere, I know BT has a shit load of it.

whether anyone has got it or not, its still now illegal to regas your car with it!!(im sure no-one would do anything illegal here biggrin.gif )
