Omega's been running a bit rough last week or so, also notice a smell coming from the engine esp whilst having the heating on. Marc had a good furtle about under the bonnet and when he removed the sparks the holes were full of oil!

He's cleaned it all thoroughly, put new spark plugs in, but am I right in thinking that we need to replace the valve covers or replace some sort of gasket?

Car is running fine now's he's done this, but I'm at a loss as to how the oil got there initially. Got my mechanic coming to check over the car on Weds anyway but just thought I'd ask....

That ,ll be the rocker cover gaskets leaking as you said Jan.Not a big job to change them.

Yup - I used to have the same problems on my Mk3 Supras. One or both gaskets would leak, leaving a pool of oil in the area between the covers, where the spark plugs sat.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yep same here use to be the back plug. Just use to pull the plug out and let it smoke for 2min then job done

Never got time to change it, ended up scraping it due to rot.

The mr2 did the same on the 1st plug

The best fix is to fit alloy cam covers off a x25xe vectra engine.the plastic camcovers fitted to v6 omega and calibra engines have very thin rubber seals, whereas the alloy cover seals are a different design and seal a lot better.when the seals are replaced you also should replace the 'o' rings on the bolt holes, there is a recess for them on the inside of the cover and they go brittle with age.i would definately recommend the alloy covers, as its a common problem and you will end up replacing the seals on the plastic covers repeatedly.did this on my v6 calibra and never had any bother with it after.

Forgot to sayit best to clean as much oil as possible from the plugholes as possible before removing the plugs, as they can get get quite full and if the oil is burnt off when the engine is run it can coat the lambda sensor and throw up a fault code and knacker the cat, quite rare but have seen it happen.have got part numbers for alloy cover seals and 'o' rings if you want them :)

Explains why I never had this problem with my old Vec GSi :)

No problem, will post the part numbers tomorrow but as said they are for the cast alloy covers not the plastic type.the alloy ones usually fetch good money on ebay but you can get them quite cheap from a breakers, especially the traditional breakers where you can still wander round and take the off yourself.iirc I paid about £15 a pair and definately money well spent.

One more thing is that a blocked crankcase breather can cause this problem on v6 vauxhalls,as the camcover seal is the first thing to leak due to increased crankcase pressure so that may be worth checking.its an aluminium housing at the rear of the engine, sort of behind the drivers side cylinder head, with a hose going to the inlet plenum.take of the hose and blow down it, you can soon tell if its clear.

Hope this helps :)

Cheers, ours isn't the V6 one tho, not sure if this makes a difference

Forget what ive just said then, I wrongly assumed it was a v6 omega , sorry.

Yours will probably have the 2.0 x20xe ecotech engine then, so I would say whip it out and V6 it instead ;)

Car's sorted, rocker cover gasket replaced, and Phil also noticed the EGR valve was knackered and sucking in air so he's blanked that off. Car still sounds a bit tappity so I've got some Slick 50 to whack in there. Only annoying thing is Marc only serviced it recently so he'll either have to remove 750ml of oil or we'll just wait til we next service it to bung it in.

All sorted for £45 anyhoo
